Newcastle United have been hit with a €6million (£5.17m) fine from Uefa after breaching the governing body's financial sustainability regulations.

The Magpies reached a negotiated settlement with Uefa's Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) to resolve the breach, which relates to overspending against the Football Earnings threshold during the three-year period concluding in June 2025.

The fine is smaller than penalties handed to other Premier League clubs in recent times, with both Aston Villa and Chelsea paying larger fines for comparable violations.

Chief executive David Hopkinson has previously stressed the importance of trading players effectively, a stance that takes on added significance given these regulatory challenges.

Uefa also determined that Newcastle must pay an additional €3m (£2.58m) for exceeding the governing body's 70 per cent Squad Cost Ratio target during the 2025 calendar year.

Despite the combined penalties, sources close to the club maintain that the sanctions do not necessitate the sale of any key first-team players during the current transfer window.

In their official statement, Newcastle said: "Newcastle United has entered into a settlement agreement with Uefa following a breach of its Financial Sustainability Regulations in the three-year period ending June 2025.

"Following an overspend in relation to Uefa's Football Earnings threshold, the club has worked closely and constructively with the CFCB to swiftly resolve the matter.

"Accordingly, the club has accepted the three-year settlement, which includes a €3m financial penalty, with a further €7m (£6m) suspended pending future compliance.

"In addition, Uefa has determined that the club will pay a further €3m due to breaching Uefa's 70 per cent SCR target in calendar year 2025.

"Newcastle United thanks Uefa for its careful consideration and is committed to full ongoing compliance."

Newcastle have already completed the sale of Anthony Gordon to Barcelona this summer in a deal worth approximately £75m.

The club are also anticipated to part ways with Sandro Tonali before the new campaign begins, with both Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City pursuing the Italian midfielder.

Newcastle turned down an opening offer of £80m from Spurs roughly a fortnight ago, with the expectation that Tonali will eventually command a fee in the region of £100m.

Captain Bruno Guimaraes has attracted attention from Arsenal, though the north London club have yet to table a formal bid despite reports last week suggesting they had seen a £55m approach rejected.

Last season marked a disappointing campaign for Eddie Howe's side, who finished 12th and four points off European places.

They were knocked out of the Champions League after being thumped by Barcelona at the Camp Nou.

Howe is understood to still being backed to stay in the dugout for next season despite the poor performances from this season.
