New Yorkers sob as maniac wielding butcher's knife is shot by cops on trendy Manhattan street

Police responded to a 911 call about a man with a weapon at an apartment building on Ludlow Street, near Rivington Street, at around 4pm and spotted blood in the lobby and leading up some stairs, sources told the New York Post. When cops then ran up the staircase, the armed man came charging down with the butcher's knife in his hand. Officers repeatedly demanded that the man show his hands, which he refused. At that point, the suspect lunged at the officers, prompting officers to discharge their firearms and a taser, striking the man at least once in the torso, according to PIX 11. The unidentified man is now in critical condition at a local hospital, while authorities later recovered the knife from the scene. First responders also treated a bystander for an injury, an unidentified source told the New York Daily News.   Another victim, a 75-year-old man, also suffered a gash to the head, but it wasn't clear whether it was caused by the knife or another object during the domestic-violence dispute, according to the Post.  A woman exiting an apartment broke down in tears after police shot a man wielding a butcher's knife on Sunday Police said they responded to a 911 call about a man with a weapon at an apartment building on Ludlow Street, near Rivington Street, at around 4pm 'I thought it was a neighborhood fight,' said Fabio Gutierrez, who was having dinner with his wife, Debora Martins, at a nearby restaurant when the violence occurred.  His wife also told how she saw the suspect getting into a gurney as first responders performed CPR. 'I was kind of shocked,' she said. 'I've never seen someone who seemed like they were dying.' Martins also said she saw another man covered in blood being led down the street by cops. 'He was not good,' she recounted. 'He was all bloody.'  As the investigation now continues, the NYPD has asked residents to avoid the area.  This is a breaking news story and will be updated.
