Proposals to build a new 12MW data centre in Neath Port Talbot have been given the go-ahead by the local council. The application for what was described as a “major development” in the Margam area could now see the creation of a data facility at a site known as Tyn-y-Caeau. The plans were handed in to the authority by Western Bio-Energy Ltd for the land based to the west of the A48 Margam Road near to junction 38 of the M4 motorway. It is approximately 1.7 hectares in size and currently accommodates a derelict complex of buildings such as a dwelling house and detached guest accommodation. The approved application could now see the erection of the data centre along with supporting infrastructure such as parking, site access, drainage, landscaping, and associated works. A data centre is a physical facility used to store, process, and manage large amounts of data for a range of digital services such as online banking, video streaming, cloud services, and AI. The plans would also include a substation and power connection to the nearby Western Bio-Energy biomass Plant as well as the retention of an existing farmhouse for ancillary use. A report given to council members said: “The applicant indicates that the development could draw up to 12MW of electricity from the WBE bomass plant (the plant generates 15MW). “The building will house the data halls and associated plant, electrical and mechanical equipment, control and monitoring rooms, offices, welfare accommodation, and ancillary storage. “External features will include generator compounds, transformers, and an equipment yard located to the rear and side elevations. “The development includes back up electricity generators and a direct grid connection to ensure that the data centre has an uninterruptable energy supply.” Objections were noted within the report with concerns raised over a loss of green space and biodiversity as well as over-industrialisation in the area with potential noise, light, and air pollution. Officers said while it was a departure from the local development plan it was recommended for approval as it was considered to represent a “sustainable and well-considered proposal that accords with the overarching objectives of national policy”. The application was later given the go-ahead at a Neath Port Talbot Council planning committee meeting. Get daily breaking news updates on your phone by joining our WhatsApp community here .
