The cycle means people end up paying the carrier bag tax at the checkout, which can sometimes add a few pounds to their final bill if they need more than one.‌The carrier bag tax was first introduced in October 2015 for England, meaning it has been more than a decade since people were simply handed bags at no extra cost when shopping. It started with a tiny 5p charge, which has since doubled to a minimum of 10p from 2021, but most shops can set their own prices, with some charging up to 40p per bag.‌Iwan Carrington, known for appearing on Stacey Solomon's BBC show Sort Your Life Out, recently posted on Instagram about how shoppers could make serious savings and "never pay again" for bags they probably already have at home. It comes as the average family could be wasting £83 a year, and in some cases even more.‌The TV host claimed that picking up four new carrier bags every week at 40p each quickly adds up over time. He said this amount would set shoppers back £1.60 a week and, spread over a year, would add £83.20 to their shopping bill on bags alone.He said: "Carrier bags in the shops are getting so expensive, it can be 40p a time, so I always fold mine up and take one with me."
