By MATT STRUDWICK, SENIOR NEWS REPORTER Published: 12:46, 27 April 2026 | Updated: 12:57, 27 April 2026 Ed Miliband has been branded 'the king of hypocrisy' for having no solar panels at his £1.6million north London home.  The Energy Secretary's tiled roof at his semi-detached house is bare of the green energy he wants Britons to install.  Yet one of his neighbours has taken advantage of the price incentive scheme in the conservation area to have the panels on their house.  Mr Miliband has been criticised by opposition MPs for not having the 'clean power' on his mansion despite 'imposing this madness on us'. He does, however, have a heat pump at the property.  The home currently has an energy performance certificate C rating, with the potential for a B. The seven-step system runs from A (the best) to G, meaning Mr Miliband's home is just above average.  Its walls are rated as 'very poor' as it is assumed there is no insulation, according to the EPC, and there is only 'some double glazing' throughout the property.  Mr Miliband drew similar criticism last year for having a gas boiler at his constituency home in Doncaster North despite his drive for heat pumps.  The Net Zero crusader has even called on people to buy £400 plug-in solar panels from Amazon and Lidl amid the crisis in the Middle East threatening to spike energy bills.  Ed Miliband has been branded 'the king of hypocrisy' for having no solar panels at his £1.6million north London home Mr Miliband last week cited the war in Iran and Russia's invasion of Ukraine to argue that Britain needed to 'double down not back down in our mission for clean energy'. He told a 'national growth debate': 'Because every solar panel we put up, every wind turbine we build, every heat pump we install, every EV on the road makes our country more secure.' Reform MP Richard Tice said: 'Ed Miliband is the king of hypocrisy, no solar panels and no heat pump despite imposing this madness on us.' Conservative Shadow Energy Secretary Claire Coutinho added: 'Is there no end to his eco-hypocrisy?' The Daily Mail approached Mr Miliband's Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) to ask if he had any plans to install the green technology on his north London home.  But a spokesperson instead pointed to the Government's £15billion Warm Homes Plan, which was announced in January.  It allows homeowners to apply for low and zero-interest loans to install solar panels on their homes in what the Government dubbed a 'rooftop revolution'. A DESNZ spokesperson told the Mail: 'We are supporting consumers to make their own choices – and we are helping make that possible through our £15bn Warm Homes Plan with grants and loans, ensuring everyone can access the benefits and savings that clean homegrown power can bring.' Last year, it emerged that Mr Miliband had claimed £121.18 from the taxpayer for gas at his constituency home. And recently he left locals in Lincolnshire feeling 'disgusted' after ignoring their objections to approve plans to build Britain's largest solar farm.  Mr Miliband said last week that wind turbines and solar farms will be built on 'vast' swathes of public land in the UK from railways to forests. He called it a 'no brainer' to use some of the public land 'to make us more secure and indeed generate revenue'.  He said that he would work with the Ministry of Defence, Network Rail and Forestry England 'to build wind, solar and batteries' to make their lands net contributors to the UK's power supply. Separately, Mr Miliband also backed efforts to install solar panels on a further 100 schools and colleges this year.  Speaking at the National Growth Debate in Westminster Mr Miliband vowed to 'double down not back down' on plans to harness more green power, as his critics demand he exploit oil and gas reserves in the North Sea instead. 'Honestly this is a no-brainer, we have got vast amounts of public land that could be used to make us more secure and indeed generate revenue,' he said. 'So we are going to harness untapped public assets from railway warehouses to unused brownfield sites to significantly expand the pipeline of renewables.' The comments below have not been moderated.
