The incursion in the Balvi municipality came amid a heavy Ukrainian strike on major Russian oil post Ust-Luga, which ignited infernos at the Gulf of Finland complex. The kamikaze drone had been redirected into the Latvian airspace by Russian 'electromagnetic warfare', said a Defence Ministry statement in Riga. 'NATO Baltic Air Policing mission fighters were scrambled in response to the threat in Latvian airspace,' the statement said. Airspace threats had been declared in five border municipalities in the Baltic state, with airspace curbs also imposed in Finland. Fighters 'successfully shot down a foreign unmanned aerial vehicle that had entered Latvia as a result of Russian electromagnetic warfare.' [File photo] 'As long as Russia's aggression in Ukraine continues, a recurrence of cases where foreign drones enter or approach Latvian airspace is possible,' the military added in its statement. The latest incident follows mounting drone incursions into NATO airspace along the alliance's eastern flank, which remains particularly exposed to security challenges arising from Russia's war in Ukraine. Last month, Romanian fighter jets shot down three drones over just three days amid a surge in drone-related incidents in the country.  The Romanian Prosecutor General's Office found that at least one of the intercepted drones was of the Shahed-type used by the Russian military in its war against Ukraine. 'To ensure the safety of the shipping lane and the work being carried out around the platform, the decision was taken to carry out a controlled destruction by detonation,' Romanian Defence Minister Radu Miruță said at the time. The Russian authorities confirmed that the Ust-Luga was ablaze, and had suffered damage as they country’s air defences overnight downed 553 Ukrainian drones. It is Russia's biggest Baltic port—a vital oil-export and sanctions-evasion hub with revenues sustaining Vladimir Putin's war economy. Regional governor Alexander Drozdenko said: 'As a result of the attack, damage was recorded and a fire broke out in the port of Ust-Luga. Specialists have begun extinguishing the fire.' The threat to NATO airspace followed concerning incidents in other alliance states amid warnings of Russian provocations in Western states. An explosion tore through an Italian ammunition plant that supplies the Ukrainian armed forces, and one person was killed and six injured at an oil terminal explosion in the Port of Rotterdam, at a facility linked to Gunvor Energy, a subsidiary of oil trading company Gunvor, founded by close Putin associate, Gennady Timchenko. Putin was also hit by a major fire at the October Revolution Shipbuilding Plant in Blagoveshchensk, six time zones east of Moscow, where a fuel and lubricants warehouse was ablaze. It was not immediately clear if the inferno was linked to Putin's war. There were major strikes on both sides of the frontline in the contested Donetsk region of Ukraine. Such Russian attacks led to Ukraine suffering the highest number of civilian deaths in a month since May 2022.
