A National Lottery winner who scooped the £1million jackpot has been identified as a Brighton bricklayer.

The construction worker, who is in his fifties, took the jackpot after matching five main numbers and the bonus ball in the Lotto draw on June 6.

The man, who has chosen to remain anonymous, said he could not believe his luck after years of playing the lottery without a major win.

The bricklayer said: "I've only ever played the Lotto and had numerous small wins in the past but nothing big so this is absolutely amazing. I cannot believe it was me."

He has planned to use the money to pay off his mortgage, set aside the rest into savings and donate a portion to charitable organisations close to his heart.

Allwyn Winners' adviser Liz Styles said she was delighted the winner was planning to support good causes.

She added: "We'd also like to tell him that, in his disbelief, it can always be you."

The Brighton win also comes as a Welsh woman is desperately waiting to find out whether she has lost a £12million jackpot after a shopkeeper threw away her ticket.

Kath Main, 46, from Abercynon in Rhondda Cynon Taf, has played the same set of numbers for 20 years.

She believes she holds the winning combination from the June 6 draw — the same draw in which the Brighton bricklayer scooped his £1million prize.

Her mother took the ticket to be checked at a local Londis but was told by the shopkeeper that the machine had not beeped and nothing had appeared on screen.

Assuming there was no win, her mother agreed to let the ticket be thrown away.

Ms Main later realised her numbers matched the unclaimed £12million jackpot.

By the time she found out, the bin had already been emptied.

Ms Main said: "I said: 'Well we've won the lottery,' and she said: 'I checked and there are no winners.' I said: 'No, it's a winner, we've won.' She said: 'How much?' and I said: '£12 million.' She said: 'It can't be, the ticket's in the bin.'"

She has since contacted National Lottery operator Allwyn with proof of purchase.

She is now waiting up to 30 days for a decision on whether her claim will be upheld, saying: "I'm the unluckiest person to win the lottery because I don’t have the money."

The owner of the Londis branch, Karan Kumar, said it would be "amazing" if she won, admitting the machine "could have been playing up".

Lottery draws have since been suspended at the shop while the investigation is carried out.

Allwyn has confirmed the investigation is underway.

It added it is "the only major lottery that allows players to claim a prize if a winning ticket has been lost, stolen or destroyed".

The National Lottery also rolled out its biggest ever format change, with a new two-round Lotto structure introduced on June 10 giving players two chances to win from a single £2 line.

The changes are expected to improve players' chances of winning any prize from one in 9.3 to one in 4.9.

They are also expected to more than double the annual number of Lotto millionaires from around 140 to approximately 345.

Each week, National Lottery players help generate around £33 million for good causes across the UK, with more than £53 billion raised since launch in 1994.
