young talents for years. On Sunday, he recorded his first career Cup Series win at Talladega. Sean Gardner / Getty Images Share articleTALLADEGA, Ala. — NASCAR needs stars to revive its plateauing popularity. And on Sunday at its biggest racetrack, a new star may have been born. The showy, brash and one-of-a-kind young talent named Carson Hocevar became a first-time NASCAR Cup Series winner at Talladega Superspeedway, then figured out a way to do a unique celebration previously unseen in NASCAR history. After winning the race, Hocevar took a seat on the driver’s side window frame of his car, kept his legs inside the car and somehow took a ride all the way down the Talladega frontstretch, gesturing to the crowd, waving, pointing and pounding his roof with enthusiasm as the fans greeted him with a roar. HE IS DRIVING THE CAR AND CELEBRATING WITH THE FANS … AT THE SAME TIME!!! pic.twitter.com/8DaQUd6pbl — NASCAR (@NASCAR) April 26, 2026 Fox Sports analyst Clint Bowyer immediately called the celebration, “The best one I’ve ever seen in any form of motorsports.” The finish wasn’t too shabby, either. At the white flag, Hocevar and Chris Buescher were side by side — Hocevar down low, Buescher up high. Off of Turn 4, Buescher lost some of his momentum, and Hocevar had just enough to win the race by 0.11 seconds. The 23-year-old Hocevar has quickly established two fan bases: Younger NASCAR fans, who he connects with through a deft touch on social media and Twitch livestreams, and older NASCAR fans, who have drawn comparisons to Dale Earnhardt Sr. thanks to Hocevar’s unapologetic racing style. Last year, he was labeled the “Hurricane” by NBC Sports announcer Leigh Diffey, an apt moniker that has stuck. Now the Michigan native might be able to storm through NASCAR’s fan base, welcoming new members of his bandwagon along the way. The victory was also significant for Hocevar’s team, Spire Motorsports, which has been known as a team on the rise but had yet to emphatically break through. Before Sunday, the organization had just one other victory — a shocking 2019 rain-shortened Daytona win by Justin Haley. This season, Spire has taken another step forward with three of its drivers in playoff contention for the first time — Hocevar (who jumped to eighth in the standings with the win), surprising newcomer Daniel Suárez (14th) and veteran Michael McDowell, who was 19th before tumbling four spots to 23rd after a crash at Talladega. The organization is part of the same ownership family as the new Cadillac F1 Team, and its parent company also owns the Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Dodgers. But Spire has also battled legal issues this year after it was dragged into a lawsuit involving Joe Gibbs Racing and former competition director Chris Gabehart, who is now Spire’s chief motorsports officer. A temporary restraining order from a federal judge allows Gabehart to attend Cup Series races, but he is not allowed to perform any similar duties to his old JGR role. Multi-car accidents are common at Talladega, so much so that they’re nicknamed the “Big One,” but Sunday had one that was eye-popping due to the sheer volume. The official number is 26. Twenty-six! That’s how many cars were listed in the race report as being involved in an accident during Stage 2, making it one of the biggest in NASCAR history. (The record is 28, set at Talladega in Oct. 2024.) .@NASCARONFOX takes a closer look at the crash on Lap 115. pic.twitter.com/sh0twWljJl — NASCAR (@NASCAR) April 26, 2026 Some of those involved on Sunday were able to make repairs and continue, such as points leader Tyler Reddick, who finished 14th. However, many weren’t as fortunate, with several contenders’ races ending prematurely, including Bubba Wallace, Kyle Larson, Joey Logano, Brad Keselowski, Ryan Blaney and William Byron. The calamity began when a bump from Ross Chastain caused Wallace’s car to dart sideways as they ran at the front of the pack, and from there chaos ensued with Wallace bouncing off multiple cars and others piling in. When it was over, the garage looked like a junkyard and the race took on a much different complexion. “They just started wrecking above me,” Logano said. “You’re kind of seeing it happen and hope they stay up there, and you’re able to get by it. The wreck started moving down the hill, and there we were. It’s just unfortunate. That’s Talladega.” Newly named NASCAR CEO Steve O’Donnell said this weekend he wants to see fun return to stock car racing. Well, Sunday’s winner might help do that. Hocevar, who grew up as a diehard NASCAR fan has a sixth sense for understanding what resonates from an entertainment standpoint. It’s no coincidence that he has fully embraced the arrival of YouTube star Cleetus McFarland, who finished second in Saturday’s ARCA Series race. McFarland, who has more than 4 million subscribers on YouTube, has injected a breath of fresh air into NASCAR with his enthusiasm and genuine excitement for trying to learn stock car racing. When he races, as he did at Talladega and also last weekend at Kansas, his fans show up to follow him like he’s an A-list celebrity. Hocevar and McFarland have continued to hit if off, and the two gave one of the more hilarious NASCAR interviews in recent memory last week at Kansas after McFarland’s oil line broke. Then on Saturday, Hocevar cheered emphatically for his friend on the pit road wall as McFarland raced for the checkered flag. Just one day later, it was Hocevar taking the checkered flag himself. NASCAR alternating the stage lengths in an attempt to curb fuel-saving in the final two stages meant an elongated Stage 1, where teams would be forced to conserve fuel. Going into Sunday, it was a guessing game as to what strategies teams and manufacturers would employ and what the reaction would be among fans, many of whom have recently expressed displeasure with saving fuel becoming an essential element at superspeedways. As anticipated, strategies ran the gamut during Stage 1, with some teams stretching to make the 98-lap distance on a single stop and others pitting multiple times. But every team attempted to conserve fuel, and afterward, opinions were mixed whether the longer stage was effective. “I enjoyed it. I mean, it’s a crew chief’s game at that point, and you’re just trying to do what they tell you to do,” Logano said. “It was interesting, I think. I don’t know what it was from the fan’s perspective, but from inside the car, it was interesting seeing how it all played out.” Other drivers were less enthusiastic, though most understood that circumstances created by the current car, the intricacies of superspeedway racing and the importance of track position necessitated that they save fuel to be competitive. NASCAR is likely to further examine potential remedies before the next superspeedway race, at Daytona in August. One idea floated by officials is mandating teams change all four tires if they stop for fuel, effectively forcing teams to stay on pit road longer, so that teams could no longer just stop for a splash.
