Tetouan – NASA has unveiled an expansive new strategy to establish a permanent human base on the Moon, outlining a plan that includes 73 landing missions in what is being described as its most ambitious space initiative since the Apollo program.

Detailed in a newly released document titled the “Moon Base User’s Guide”, the plan goes beyond a conceptual framework, presenting a structured and operational roadmap for sustained human activity on the lunar surface. 

According to Al Jazeera , the initiative is positioned as a critical step toward future missions to Mars, reflecting a broader shift in long-term space exploration strategy.

A three-phase path to a permanent lunar presence

At the core of the plan is a phased deployment model designed to gradually expand human presence and capabilities on the Moon. 

The first phase, extending through 2029, will involve 21 landing missions aimed at securing consistent and repeatable access to the lunar surface. 

These early missions are expected to focus on testing landing systems, transporting essential equipment, and refining operational procedures.

The second phase, scheduled between 2029 and 2032, includes 24 additional landings dedicated to building the foundational infrastructure of the lunar base. 

This stage is expected to mark the beginning of semi-annual crewed missions, signaling a transition from short-term exploration to longer-duration stays.

From 2032 onward, the third phase will see 28 further landings intended to consolidate a permanent human presence. 

This stage will expand logistical capabilities, including the transport of cargo between the Moon and Earth, and support more complex scientific and industrial activities.

Despite its scale and ambition, the project faces substantial technical challenges. 

Among the most critical is the development of reliable energy sources capable of operating in the Moon’s extreme conditions. 

NASA tests limits of long-term lunar life

NASA is exploring compact nuclear reactors as a potential solution, given the limitations of solar power in regions with prolonged darkness.

Sustaining human life on the lunar surface over extended periods also presents significant risks. 

Exposure to cosmic radiation, extreme temperature variations, and fine, abrasive lunar dust are all factors that require new engineering and biomedical solutions.

These constraints show the complexity of transitioning from exploration missions to permanent habitation.

Financial and strategic pressures further complicate the timeline. The broader Artemis program has already faced budgetary constraints and delays, raising questions about the feasibility of maintaining such an intensive launch schedule. 

At the same time, international competition is intensifying, particularly with China accelerating its own lunar ambitions and aiming to land astronauts on the Moon before the end of the decade.

NASA officials have signaled a shift in mindset in response to these challenges, emphasizing a more flexible and iterative approach to development. 

The agency appears increasingly willing to accept setbacks as part of a broader effort to accelerate technological progress and reduce long-term risk.

Beyond its technological scope, the lunar base project carries significant scientific and strategic importance. 

The Moon is expected to function as a large-scale testing ground for key systems, including sustainable energy generation and the extraction of water from lunar ice deposits. 

Success in these areas would represent a major step forward in enabling deep space missions.

In this context, the Moon is no longer viewed as a final destination, but as a critical platform for future exploration. 

By establishing a permanent presence there, NASA aims to build the operational experience and technological foundation necessary to extend human activity further into the solar system.
