Names and contact details of more than 100,000 police officers leaked on dark web after hack

The cyber criminals have allegedly uploaded the information onto the dark web. It is believed they have infiltrated computer systems belonging to the Home Office, the Ministry of Defence (MoD), the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) and the National Crime Agency (NCA). The Police Federation said the breach 'raises serious concerns for officer and staff safety'. Nascent hacking group ExfilSquad are said to be behind the leak, according to The Times. A Government spokesman said: 'We have dedicated capabilities to respond to cyber incidents, and it would be inappropriate to comment on a live investigation.' It comes after hackers stole contact details from the Department for Education (DfE), with more than half a million pieces of data reportedly taken in the breach last month. ExfilSquad were also thought to be behind that incident. Hackers have leaked the names and contact details of around 100,000 police officers Police Federation national chairman Tiff Lynch said: 'At a time when cyber threats are becoming increasingly sophisticated, policing and its partners must be properly funded to ensure the strongest possible cyber security protections are in place to safeguard sensitive personal data.' She added: 'Our priority is the welfare of those who may be affected, and we expect robust support and clear communication for any officers or staff impacted. 'Protecting the information and safety of those who protect the public must never be compromised.' A CPS spokesman said: 'We are aware of an incident affecting the Police National Legal Database (PNLD) and are liaising closely with partners to assess any impact and support those affected.' A NCA spokesman said: 'We take the security of NCA officers extremely seriously. 'Where a potential risk to an officer is identified, we will take appropriate precautionary steps. 'Enquiries into the incident are ongoing, and we will not be commenting further at this time.' One official whose details were apparently leaked described the incident as 'very disconcerting'. The source told The Times: 'I have worked in serious organised crime and put high-level criminals behind bars. For private information to be leaked about me is very disconcerting and puts officers at serious risk. 'In the past I have been forced to move into safe houses and sell cars due to my job. Now I will have to keep my wits about me online and look out for anyone trying to get more serious information. It is not a good look.'
