Robin Elizabeth Wilcoxson, a 32-year-old US Army veteran, jumped from the 10th deck of the Carnival Valor in February 2022 after a confrontation with security.

Her tragic fall, witnessed by many passengers, left her family grappling with her sudden death and the circumstances surrounding it.

Despite being promoted to resort manager just weeks prior, her family believes an undiagnosed mental health condition contributed to her actions.

By NIC WHITE, US SENIOR INVESTIGATIONS REPORTER Published: 19:37, 18 July 2026 | Updated: 19:37, 18 July 2026 A woman whose fatal jump off a Carnival cruise ship horrified America has finally been identified four years on - and her story is a heartbreaking one.   Robin Elizabeth Wilcoxson, 32, leapt from the 10th deck of the Carnival Valor in February 2022 in front of hundreds of horrified passengers. Video of her last moments showed the US Army veteran being detained by security after a scuffle at the ship's hot tub.  Moments later, she broke free and jumped overboard, according to witnesses. The plunge itself was not captured on video, but harrowing footage shot moments later showed passengers looking into the choppy waters of the Gulf of Mexico as a flotation ring was thrown in to save her.  Wilcoxson, who had just landed a managerial role after beginning her career as a cleaner, may not even have been conscious to witness those rescue efforts. She was said to have hit her head on a lifeboat as she fell, leaving blood smeared over the side of the vessel before landing face-first in the sea.  Her body was never recovered despite a days-long Coast Guard search of the Gulf waters off Louisiana, and her identity remained a mystery. Four years on, the young mother's family still struggles with the sudden and shocking way she left their lives. Four years ago, a Carnival cruise ship passenger leapt to her death in front of horrified guests. The Daily Mail has now identified her as Robin Elizabeth Wilcoxson, 32 Wilcoxson had started a new job as a resort manager weeks before her tragic death on the Carnival Valor as it sailed through the Gulf of Mexico. The mother-of-two was a US Army veteran who had worked her way up to the senior position after starting out as a cleaner What caused her to jump off the 200ft ship into the waves below is known only to her, but her family insists she was not suicidal, drunk, or on drugs. Instead, they believe the onset of an undiagnosed mental health condition combined with work stress caused an escalating psychological crisis. Her husband and sister were so concerned that they planned to put her on a 72-hour hold the second she was back on dry land.  Tragically, Wilcoxson lost her life before they were able to do so.  Just three weeks before her death, Wilcoxson was promoted to resort manager of the Atlantica Resort in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.  The promotion marked an impressive professional rise, a decade after Wilcoxson started out cleaning hotel rooms. Wilcoxson grew up in Wilmington, Delaware, the middle child of two sisters, before joining the US Army straight out of high school. 'Robin was an amazing person, she helped raise me,' her sister Aishia Chestnut, who is seven years younger, told the Daily Mail. After serving her four-year tour in Army logistics, she got an entry-level job with Atlantica's owner, Brittain Hotels, and moved to South Carolina. Wilcoxson with her mother Michelle (left) and one of her sisters and young daughters Wilcoxson (back right) with one of her sisters and her brother Chaz Nelson That's where she met her future husband, Chris 'Gunna' Wilcoxson. They were just 22 and quickly inseparable, together for 10 years before her tragic plunge. 'She helped me gain compassion, she made me learn patience, she helped me use my rage for a purpose,' Chris reflected after her death. 'I can go on forever and day about this wonderful soul, but she likes it when I keep it simple and sweet. So I will do that. 'To my wife and true soulmate, I want you to know that I love you and I miss you so much. You left me some strong daughters and I appreciate it so much.  'Your lessons and voice will never stop crossing my lips when I talk to our babies. Because without you I wouldn’t even have those two angels.' The devastated husband, who was on the Valor but not with Wilcoxson when she jumped, spiraled into a dark pit of despair in the weeks that followed. He admitted in dozens of tortured social media posts that if it wasn't for their two young daughters, now aged 16 and 10, he wouldn't have been able to go on.  'If they didn’t exist, hands down, it would have been two memorials yesterday,' he wrote the day after Wilcoxson's funeral on February 28. Exactly what happened in the last moments of Wilcoxson's life is largely still unclear, and her family isn't even sure what triggered it. Passengers who met Wilcoxson as the Valor wound its way through the Caribbean over five days didn't have a bad word to say about the 'beautiful young woman.' 'I still to this day think it is a terrible situation that happened to her,' one of them told the Daily Mail this week. Wilcoxson with her widower Chris 'Gunna' Wilcoxson, whom she met a decade before her death soon after moving to South Carolina from Delaware Wilcoxson with three of her sisters in a photo posted in tribute after her death Chestnut, who is a clinical counselor in Myrtle Beach, said her sister showed signs of depression, but never had any other mental health concerns before the cruise. But once the vacation began, Wilcoxson began acting increasingly strangely, which concerned Chris enough to contact Chestnut. 'Robin was acting weird the whole vacation, she clearly wasn't herself,' Chestnut told the Daily Mail. 'There was a lot of strange behavior and the way she spoke to him (Chris), and she was getting into arguments with people about nothing. 'She was having these emotional spells that were out of character. 'It was getting worse and worse as the cruise went on and she was getting more aggressive. All this was completely out of normal behavior for her.' Chris called Chestnut the morning Wilcoxson died, telling her his wife was 'increasingly agitated'. Early the previous evening, she had an altercation with another man on the ship that was seen by other passengers. 'Robin was with a group of people and was all dressed up, wearing a beautiful brown dress, hair freshly done in braids and looked like she was ready to have a good time,' a guest she met earlier on the trip said. Wilcoxson (center) with her sister Aishia Chestnut (left), who was so concerned about her behavior during the cruise she planned to have her put on a psych hold Wilcoxson's family believe the onset of an undiagnosed mental health condition combined with work stress caused an escalating psychological crisis 'But she was having a conversation with somebody that didn’t seem very pleasant. Although there was no incident per se, you could tell that she was not exactly pleased with her current situation.' The passenger said Chris came up to the man afterwards and smoothed over the situation.  Chestnut said she and Chris were concerned enough about Wilcoxson's antics that they decided to put her on a 72-hour psych hold after the boat returned. They went as far as contacting local police so the Coast Guard would be aware of the situation and be able to assist if necessary. 'We saw how it was escalating and wanted to do something before it got worse,' Chestnut explained. As the ship headed across the Gulf from Cozumel in Mexico to its home port of New Orleans, Wilcoxson spiraled out of control. Passengers described her as 'unruly' and said she was throwing drinks at people and fought with security when they tried to stop her. Wilcoxson was said to have got into a screaming match with another woman who left a plate of food on her seat next to the hot tub, and responded by throwing the plate across the deck. 'We walked out of the glass doors and heard some screaming walked a couple of steps and then the food plate landed right at my feet,' one witness told the Daily Mail. Wilcoxson was heard yelling out the name of her friend Alicia as she was escorted away  'So we walked about 5ft further so that we could look up on the balcony and see what was going on and we heard them arguing. 'She jumped on top of another lady and wouldn’t let her get up after throwing the lady's food over the deck onto the lido deck.' Video showed three security guards grab her from the floor next to the hot tub, hold her arms behind her back and frog march her away. 'Alicia!' she cried out several times as she was taken away.  Alicia is her best friend, who planned to go on the cruise but had to pull out. Wilcoxson yelling for a friend who was not even on the cruise offers a further hint to her mental despair.  Wilcoxson then somehow escaped the security's grasp and ran to the edge of the deck, climbing and jumping over the railing before anyone could stop her. Chestnut said the footage still haunted her and the only way she could explain her behavior was undiagnosed bipolar disorder manifesting for the first time. 'Robin was about the right age for it to show up in an adult,' she said. 'Our family has a history of mental health issues, and I've always suspected [since her death] that was what it was. 'She was under a lot of pressure at work and that could have been a trigger.'  Horrified screaming filled the air as the ship made a hard turn in a desperate rescue effort. For five hours it sat dead in the water searching in vain Several passengers tried to go overboard to save her and had to be held back by security to avoid a mass-tragedy.  One passenger later described to their friends online how they saw Wilcoxson floating face up in the ocean moments later, limp and lifeless. Horrified screaming filled the air as the ship made a hard turn in a desperate rescue effort. For five hours it sat dead in the water searching in vain. The Coast Guard, assisted by its aircrew, took over and searched about 2,514 square miles for 14 hours before giving up. Just hours later, the Valor took on a new 2,980 guests and headed on a four-day cruise of Mexico. For help and support, contact the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline on 988
