By VANESSA STOYKOV, MONEY EDUCATOR Published: 14:04, 8 August 2026 | Updated: 14:04, 8 August 2026 My mum has always been the one who held our family together - but two years ago she was diagnosed with cancer.  Since then, I've been the one taking her to specialist appointments, managing her medications, buying her groceries, paying her bills and helping her stay in her own home.  As her health declined, she asked me to help with her banking and day-to-day finances because it all became too overwhelming for her. I never thought twice about it. She's my mum. My two brothers, however, have been largely absent. One lives interstate and says work makes it difficult to visit. The other lives just half an hour away but somehow always has an excuse. Three weeks ago, Mum was admitted to palliative care. Money educator Vanessa Stoykov (pictured) helps a woman who is in conflict with her brothers about her mum's finances  Almost overnight, both of my brothers appeared. At first, I thought they had realised how precious this time was. Instead, the questions started almost immediately. 'How much money is in her accounts?' 'Have you been paying yourself?' 'Has Mum changed anything recently?' One brother even asked to see bank statements because he wanted to make sure 'everything was above board'. 'What hurts most is that the brothers who barely visited now seem far more interested in Mum's finances than spending time with her while she's still alive,' Rose writes to Vanessa. (Stock image) I've kept every receipt, every invoice and every record of the money I've spent on Mum's behalf. Sometimes I paid for groceries, prescriptions or household expenses myself and reimbursed myself later because it was easier than asking Mum every time she needed something. I've never taken a dollar that wasn't hers. What hurts most is that the brothers who barely visited now seem far more interested in Mum's finances than spending time with her while she's still alive. Instead of sitting by Mum's bedside, we're arguing in hospital corridors about money that doesn't even belong to us yet. Part of me wants to hand over every document just to stop the accusations. Another part of me feels angry that after everything I've done, I'm the one being treated with suspicion. How do I keep the peace, protect Mum's dignity and stop money overshadowing what little time we have left together? Rose, I'm so sorry you're going through this. Sadly, this is one of the most common family situations I hear about. Money rarely creates the conflict - it exposes emotions that have often been building for years. One sibling becomes the carer, another lives away, another isn't as involved, and by the time a parent reaches palliative care, grief, guilt and old family dynamics collide. From what you've shared, you've acted in good faith and done exactly what anyone caring for an ageing parent should do. You've kept records, you've managed your mum's affairs responsibly and you've put her needs first.  Continue to be transparent, but don't feel you have to defend yourself every time someone questions your motives. If your brothers have genuine concerns, suggest that any financial questions be discussed with your mum's solicitor or another independent professional when the time is right. Right now, the priority should be your mum - not her estate. This is also a reminder for every family reading this. Don't wait until someone is in palliative care to talk about ageing, powers of attorney, finances, care arrangements and inheritance. These conversations are uncomfortable, but they're far easier than trying to have them in the middle of grief. If you're not sure where to begin, I've created a free Ageing Parents and Inheritance Conversation Guide to help families start these important discussions before a crisis. You can download it here. Rose, years from now I hope you remember sitting beside your mum, holding her hand and knowing you were there for her - not the arguments in the hospital corridor.  The love and care you've given your mum is something no inheritance can ever equal, and no one can ever take that away from you.
