Mum of young woman allegedly killed by rapper MC Triks demands overhaul of domestic violence support for women after it was revealed her daughter went to police days earlier

Djuarn Baker-Adams, 27, was found unresponsive by emergency services in the bedroom of a Slacks Creek property near Logan, south of Brisbane, in the early hours of Wednesday. She died at the scene. Ronald Cora, 37, who performs under the stage name MC Triks, is understood to have made the Triple Zero call.  Cora was charged with murder (domestic violence) later that day.  Ms Baker-Adams' mother, Patrice Power, said on Thursday the family had desperately tried to help her daughter through an allegedly years-long troubled relationship.  'As a mother, you just hope and pray you never get that knock on the door and I got it yesterday,' she told The Courier Mail. She described falling to the ground when police had visited her and that her whole family was shell-shocked and felt sick over wondering what more they could have done. 'I never thought I would be one of those parents that would be going through this. But... what was going on, it was always a possibility.' Djuarn Baker-Adams with her mum Patrice Power Accused murderer Ronald Cora is a hip hop rapper who goes by the stage name MC Triks  In Queensland alone, there has been another three alleged domestic violence murders in just the last month-and-a-half. Jana Armstrong, 30, went missing from her Toowoomba home on July 7 leaving her newborn baby behind, with her body later found near a country road. Her ex-partner Dharminder Singh, 48, has been accused of her murder. On June 28, Mallorie Roberts, 23, from Biggera Waters was allegedly shot dead by her partner Ethan Midgley, 23, who has been charged. And on August 6, following a siege at a property in Charleville, Julia Brundson, 23, was found dead in a suspected murder-suicide carried out by her partner Michael Waltke, 45.  Detectives confirmed Ms Baker-Adams had recently been in contact with police about safety and domestic violence concerns, and that a temporary protection order had been issued to protect her. 'From our preliminary investigations, I would suggest that at one point they were in a relationship,' Detective Inspector Ian Galpin told reporters on Wednesday. 'The reason she was at that particular location is still under investigation but it will certainly form part of our investigation. More must be done by authorities to tackle the scourge of domestic violence, Ms Power said 'What I can tell you is that within the last 10 days, police did have contact with this woman in relation to domestic and family violence-related issues. 'Having reviewed the investigation thus far, I am satisfied that police took the appropriate actions, that support had been offered to this woman as well and that other support services had been engaged.' Her mother said the system was clearly not working and Australian women were being let down. 'They need to restructure the whole thing... It needs a whole big overhaul. I think it's disgraceful, it's shocking and it's very scary.' She said there needed to be more accountability for how money allocated by the government was actually helping those on the ground. There also needed to be harsher consequences for those who are brought to the attention of the courts early on as the 'pieces of paper' handed out were largely worthless. She said Djuarn was a very important and much-loved part of their small family and that she was a beautiful person who was popular with her friends and teachers.  Cora has been involved in Brisbane's hip-hop scene for several years under the name MC Triks. He has thousands of followers on social media.  Ms Power said her daughter was a much-loved member of their small family Cora is set to appear in court on August 27 Cora has also previously performed at Invasion Day protests. A State Library of Queensland social media post from 2017 stated that Cora 'began songwriting as a contemporary healing process in response to racism'. Bodycam footage was released by Queensland Police on Wednesday. It showed Cora sitting on the front steps of the home as officers moved in.  He could be seen speaking calmly to police. He is then seen standing and placing his hands behind his back to be handcuffed. His matter has been adjourned until August 27 at Beenleigh Magistrates Court.
