A mum of five is fighting for her life in a coma after falling seriously ill on a family holiday in Gran Canaria. Emily Casey was rushed to hospital after struggling to breathe. Desperate husband Jamie said it will take £15,000 to get the 34-year-old home to the Wirral, Merseyside. Doctors initially suspected a blood clot in the lung and asked for £3,000 upfront to carry out a CT scan. But the family was later told that pneumonia had returned, with one lung full of fluid and the other partially filled. Jamie said medics then decided they needed to drain the fluid from Emily’s lungs. He was asked to leave the ICU and returned to the hotel to be with the couple’s five children. Jamie said he tried contacting Emily throughout the night but received no response to calls or messages. The next day, he rushed back to hospital and was told Emily had been placed into an induced coma. Emily’s mum then flew out to Gran Canaria to be by her daughter’s side. Jamie returned to England with the children to arrange childcare before flying back to Spain. He said Emily initially appeared to be improving before doctors told the family she had developed sepsis. According to Jamie, medics later informed them the pneumonia had taken over her lungs again and the sepsis had entered her bloodstream. He said: "The doctors told us they had caught the sepsis in time and were treating her with antibiotics. "As the days went by, Emily seemed to be carrying on improving until today we were told that Emily had gone backwards, they told us the doctors had done an X-ray on Emily’s chest and were shocked to discover the pneumonia had taken over her lungs again, and that the sepsis is now in her blood stream. "Yet they also tell us they can't seem to find the correct antibiotics to treat the infection, so more blood tests are needed. Just after the first day of Emily being in the coma, I was asked by the doctor for £8000 and was also asked about insurance. "Emily does have insurance but as Emily didn't declare that she recently had pneumonia, they have told us there is a good chance the policy will be void." He said the family has since struggled to get in contact with the insurance company. Jamie has now launched a GoFundMe page to help cover medical costs and bring Emily home. He added: “Emily is only 34 years old and is the mother to our five children. “I thank you all from the bottom of mine and our children’s hearts for any donations you can make during this difficult time no matter how big or small.” At the time of writing £11,000 had been raised towards its £15,000 target.
