Mum of Brit, 23, shot dead by her own dad in US slams cops for 'ignoring evidence'

The mother of a young Brit shot dead by her own father in America after a row over Donald Trump has hit out at police for 'ignoring evidence' given to them. Lucy Harrison , from Warrington, Cheshire, was visiting her dad Kris in Texas, US, when he shot her in the heart when discussing the President. The man was investigated for suspected manslaughter but no charges were brought after he claimed he gunned her down accidentally while “showing off” his firearm to his daughter. Jane Coates, 49, believes police did not properly examine evidence of recklessness after her daughter Lucy's death on January 10, 2025. The devastated mother does not believe her ex meant to kill their child, but that he acted carelessly under the influence of alcohol, a conclusion also drawn by a UK coroner last month. Fashion worker Lucy flew with her boyfriend, Sam Littler, to stay with her dad in on December 28, 2024. Harrison had moved there when Lucy was a child and had a documented battle with addiction. Now in a new interview, Ms Coates claims the tragic 23-year-old has been betrayed by the authorities. “I just feel she’s been so let down," she told Sky News. "I feel anger. It is incredibly frustrating because there was physical evidence there. There was a diagram in the inquest bundle which shows the positioning of the gun, the gun casing and Lucy’s blood stains on the floor. “They were just off the en-suite to the bedroom, which showed she was not stood next to Kris as he had claimed. I feel anger that police actually took the time to draw this diagram. For me, it was like they had not chosen to follow the physical evidence.” An autopsy report found the bullet struck Lucy with a downward trajectory. Cheshire Coroner Jacqueline Devonish concluded the inquest into her death in February. She said: “To shoot her through the chest whilst she was standing would have required him to have been pointing the gun without checking for bullets and pulled the trigger. I find this reckless.” Within a day of the shooing, police decided the incident was an "accident". They opened an investigation into a potential "criminally negligent homicide" but Harrison was never arrested. The case was handed to a grand jury, which decided not to issue an indictment. He said he kept a Glock 9mm semi-automatic handgun in his bedside cabinet for "security". He said: "As I lifted the gun to show her I suddenly heard a loud bang. I did not understand what had happened. Lucy immediately fell." He claimed that he could not remember whether his finger was on the trigger. Jane spoke to the Sunday Times a year on from her death and said: "We will never know actually how much Kris drank that morning ... and I just think that's not good enough." She said she hopes the coroner's findings regarding Harrison's "recklessness" under the influence of alcohol could prompt US authorities to launch a new investigation.
