Motorists face giving up driving as petrol and diesel costs impact every household's bills

One in five motorists across the UK has been forced to either reduce their driving or trim household budgets to cover fuel expenses.

The findings, from the Money and Pensions Service, come as petrol and diesel prices remain at levels approaching historic peaks, placing a significant strain on family finances nationwide.

A survey of more than 2,000 adults conducted by YouGov highlighted the extent to which elevated forecourt costs are reshaping spending habits for millions of British drivers.

Around 17 per cent of drivers reported that while they can manage fuel costs, they must sometimes reduce their vehicle usage or cut back on other household expenses to do so.

A further two per cent of drivers questioned stated that fuel had become entirely unaffordable for them, particularly in recent months.

Six in 10 motorists expressed concern about what they are paying at the pumps, while awareness of cheaper alternatives remains limited.

Just over half of drivers surveyed said they knew which filling station near their home offered the lowest prices, but for the other half, they have been paying more for fuel.

This knowledge gap suggested many motorists may be paying more than necessary, even when more affordable options exist within easy reach.

Drivers are able to use a number of different tools to find the cheapest fuel available in their local area, including the Government's Fuel Finder service.

This shows drivers up-to-date information on the latest petrol, diesel and premium fuel prices, with updates required within 30 minutes of a change or the unavailability of fuel.

Experts consistently urge motorists to search around for the best fuel prices to ensure they are not being ripped off at the pumps.
