Drivers have been warned of parking bans outside their homes after a local council announced temporary restrictions while the street undergoes a cleaning operation.

Leicester City Council has launched a rolling programme of gully clearance work that will see temporary parking suspensions enforced on 81 residential streets throughout August.

The initiative targets neighbourhoods where densely parked vehicles ordinarily prevent council teams from carrying out routine drain clearing and street sweeping.

Parking on each affected road will be suspended for a maximum of two days to allow maintenance crews to complete the work.

The programme, which began on August 3, covers streets in the Spinney Hills, Stoneygate and Wycliffe areas of the city, with teams progressing through different roads on a daily basis.

The council explained the work is essential for keeping roads safe and minimising flood risk across Leicester.

Work this week commenced with parking restrictions in place on Egginton Street, Earl Howe Street, Breedon Street and a section of Mere Road between St Peters Road and Park Vale Road/Derwent Street.

Today (August 11), crews will be moving on to Cork Street, Twycross Street, Wilne Street and Donnington Street, where suspensions will remain in force until Wednesday.

Parked cars

The first phase of the programme, which ran from August 3 to 8, had already covered more than 20 streets.

Councillor Geoff Whittle, assistant city mayor for environment and transport, said: "This latest phase of targeted gully clearance will allow us to tackle heavily parked-up residential roads where it can be difficult to carry out this routine maintenance work under regular day-to-day circumstances.

"We write to all residents in the roads affected to let them know that parking will be suspended for a maximum of two days while we carry out this important maintenance work."

The programme's schedule runs through to Saturday, August 15, with a fresh set of streets affected each day.

Tomorrow, August 12, parking will be lifted on Dronfield Street, Bonsall Street, Kings Newton Street, Ashbourne Street and Darley Street.

On Thursday, August 13, crews will turn their attention to Fairfield Street, Abney Street, Worthington Street and Dale Street.

The final batch of roads, scheduled for Friday, includes Diseworth Street, Park Vale Road, Spalding Street and Derwent Street, with suspensions lasting until the following day.

Earlier in the programme, streets such as Berners Street, Florence Road, Wilson Street and Laurel Road were cleared, alongside St Saviours Hill and a separate stretch of Mere Road between Evington Road and St Peters Road.

Cars on driveway

Mr Whittle stressed that the maintenance work plays a crucial role in protecting Leicester's streets: "It is a vital part of keeping our roads safe and well maintained and helping to reduce the risk of flooding in the city."

Residents on each affected street receive written notification from the council in advance, informing them of the dates when parking will be temporarily unavailable outside their homes.

The authority has published a complete list of all 81 roads included in the programme, along with their specific suspension and cleaning dates, on its website.
