Morocco Women Rise to 62nd in FIFA Ranking Ahead of WAFCON 2026

Rabat – Morocco’s women’s national football team has climbed four places in the latest FIFA ranking, moving to 62nd worldwide.

The update, released on April 21, places the Atlas Lionesses fourth in Africa, behind Nigeria, South Africa, and Ghana.

The rise comes after a series of positive friendly results. Morocco recently defeated Cape Verde 3‑0, followed by another 3‑0 win against Tanzania, before drawing 1‑1 with Mali in their most recent match.

These games were part of a wider preparation plan for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, which Morocco will host later this year.

The ranking reflects more than just short‑term form. Morocco’s women have already proven their ability to compete at the highest level.

They reached the final of the last Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, narrowly losing to Nigeria, and advanced to the round of 16 at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Those achievements changed perceptions of the team both inside and outside Africa, establishing them as a rising force rather than outsiders.

Hosting WAFCON 2026 adds another layer of expectation. The tournament will run from July 25 to August 16, with Morocco drawn into Group A alongside Algeria, Senegal, and Kenya.

Playing at home brings pressure but also opportunity, familiar conditions, strong local support, and the chance to turn steady progress into a major title push.

The Royal Moroccan Football Federation has invested heavily in women’s football, expanding domestic competitions and strengthening support for the national side.

That commitment has created a deeper talent pool and improved preparation for international tournaments. The latest rise in ranking is a sign that those efforts are paying off.

Still, the climb to 62nd is only a step. Morocco remains outside the global elite, and rankings alone will not win matches.

The challenge now is to translate momentum into results when the tournament begins. Every game in Group A will test the team’s resilience and ability to handle pressure.
