Moroccan authorities have recorded 7,474 infractions during market control operations conducted in the lead-up to and throughout the holy month of Ramadan, government spokesperson Mustapha Baitas disclosed on Thursday.

Speaking at a press briefing following the weekly government council meeting, Baitas said local commissions overseen by the Ministry of Interior carried out a total of 83,980 inspection operations between the 1st of Shaaban and the 27th of Ramadan 1447 AH across the country’s prefectures and provinces.

Of the infractions recorded, 1,934 resulted in formal warnings, while 5,540 led to official reports being filed and referred to competent courts for further legal action, the minister delegate in charge of relations with parliament specified.

The inspections also led to the seizure and destruction of 602 tonnes of products deemed unfit for consumption or found in violation of applicable regulatory standards, Baitas added.

He noted that meetings held at the Ministry of Economy and Finance – the most recent on Wednesday, March 18, with all relevant government departments in attendance – confirmed that essential goods remain abundantly available across markets nationwide.

Baitas stressed that market surveillance operations are a year-round endeavor but acknowledged that enforcement efforts are significantly ramped up during Ramadan, when consumer demand surges.
