Morocco, Malawi Deepen Parliamentary Ties with New Cooperation Agreement in Istanbul
Rabat – Morocco and Malawi have taken a new step toward strengthening bilateral ties, signing a memorandum of understanding aimed at boosting parliamentary cooperation on the sidelines of the 152nd General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Istanbul.
The agreement was formalized between the House of Councilors of Morocco and the National Assembly of Malawi, with signatures from Mohamed Ould Errachid and Sameer Gaffar Suleman following bilateral talks held during the international gathering.
The memorandum lays the groundwork for a structured parliamentary partnership centered on exchanging expertise, increasing institutional visits, and enhancing coordination within regional and global parliamentary forums. Both sides framed the agreement as a practical step toward aligning legislative efforts and fostering dialogue on shared priorities.
Speaking on the occasion, Ould Errachid highlighted the longstanding ties between Morocco and Malawi. He described them as rooted in mutual respect and a shared commitment to African solidarity, stressing the centrality of deepening parliamentary collaboration in building a more integrated and mutually beneficial African partnership.

He also shed light on the growing responsibilities of national parliaments across Africa amid evolving challenges, noting that legislative institutions are increasingly called upon to support stability, advance development agendas, and strengthen South-South cooperation while advocating for citizens’ interests on the international stage.
For his part, Gaffar Suleman reaffirmed Malawi’s commitment to reinforcing bilateral relations with Morocco, praising the enduring diplomatic ties between the two nations. He pointed to Morocco’s leadership role on the continent, particularly in promoting parliamentary cooperation and supporting the development of African legislative frameworks.
Malawi is increasingly emerging as a strategic partner for Morocco in Africa, with cooperation extending well beyond parliamentary engagement.
In 2025, Malawi reaffirmed its firm support for Morocco’s territorial integrity during talks held in Rabat. The Southern African nation also welcomed the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, which reinforces the Moroccan autonomy plan as the sole basis for reaching a political solution to the Sahara dispute.
The 152nd IPU Assembly, which opened earlier this week in Istanbul, continues through Sunday, bringing together parliamentary delegations from across the world. Morocco is represented by a delegation led by Ould Errachid, reflecting the country’s active engagement in multilateral parliamentary diplomacy.
