Morocco, France Strengthen Strategic Dialogue on Energy Security
Agadir – Morocco’s Energy Transition Minister Leila Benali received today a delegation from the French Senate’s Commission on Territorial Planning and Sustainable Development, exploring key areas for both countries to deepen energy partnership.
The French delegation was led by Senator Jean-François Longeot, and their meeting with Minister Benali took place in the presence of senior officials from her ministry and representatives of the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (Masen).
Discussions centered around the shared ambition of both countries to strengthen bilateral cooperation in response to pressing global challenges, including energy security, climate change, and the transition toward sustainable economic models.
The meeting also addressed the strategic Franco-Moroccan relations, particularly in supporting large-scale structural reforms and investment in clean energy infrastructure.
“This meeting was an opportunity to reaffirm the strength of the strategic partnership between Morocco and France and its importance in addressing global challenges related to energy security, climate change, and sustainable development,” Benali said today.
During the meeting, the minister presented the main pillars of Morocco’s national energy strategy, which places renewable energy at the center of its development model.
This includes accelerating the deployment of solar, wind, and hydroelectric projects, while also advancing emerging sectors such as green hydrogen, which is seen as a key component of future global energy systems.
“It presented the main guidelines of national policies on energy transition and sustainable development, particularly the development of renewable energies, green hydrogen, and electricity interconnection projects, as well as the acceleration of the transition to a low-carbon economy,” the ministry shared in a readout of the meeting.
The meeting also addressed Morocco’s growing efforts to enhance electricity interconnection capacities, both at the regional and international levels, as a means of reinforcing energy resilience and integration.
This meeting builds on a long standing partnership between the new countries, reinforced by the 2024 signing ceremony of several agreements.
This ceremony was held in Rabat in the presence of King Mohammed VI, accompanied by Prince Moulay El Hassan, Prince Moulay Rachid, and Princesses Lalla Khadija and Lalla Meryem, and the French President, Emmanuel Macron, accompanied by Brigitte Macron.
One of the agreements signed was a partnership on energy cooperation, connectivity, and energy transition. It was signed by the Minister of Energy Transition, Leila Benali, and France’s Minister Delegate to the Minister of Ecological in charge of Energy, Olga Givernet.
The partnership aims to develop cooperation and exchanges between the two parties in the energy sector, particularly in energy policy and planning, certification and regulation, renewable energies, electrical systems including production and networks, low-carbon hydrogen production and energy storage, critical metals, and molecule transport.
