Morocco, Ecuador Move Toward Deeper Trade and Investment Partnership

Tetouan – Morocco and Ecuador have launched discussions on expanding trade and investment ties, following a high-level visit to Rabat by Ecuador’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility, Gabriela Sommerfeld.

The visit, which included a large economic delegation representing the Ecuadorian Federation of Exporters (FEDEXPOR), signals a growing interest from both countries in strengthening commercial links and fostering private-sector cooperation.

Morocco’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita received his Ecuadorian counterpart for talks focused on broadening bilateral engagement across trade, investment, and business development.

The discussions built on momentum generated earlier this year, when Morocco’s General Confederation of Enterprises (CGEM) and FEDEXPOR signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at facilitating exchanges between business communities in both countries.

The agreement reflects a shared ambition to move beyond diplomatic ties and create tangible economic partnerships.

Officials on both sides are now exploring the possibility of launching broader trade negotiations, with the objective of opening new channels for exports, encouraging joint ventures, and improving market access for businesses.

The presence of private-sector representatives in the delegation underlines the practical dimension of the talks, as both governments seek to align policy frameworks with business needs.

Speaking after the meeting, Bourita said relations between Rabat and Quito are entering what he described as a “new phase,” grounded in mutual trust and reinforced cooperation.

He pointed to steady progress in bilateral relations over the past two years, particularly in the political sphere, which has helped create a more favorable environment for economic collaboration.

A key turning point, according to Bourita, was Ecuador’s decision to withdraw its recognition of the self-proclaimed Sahrawi Republic, a move that reshaped diplomatic dynamics and opened the door to closer coordination between the two countries.

Since then, both sides have worked to define a renewed roadmap that combines political dialogue with expanded economic engagement.

The evolving partnership reflects Morocco’s broader strategy to diversify its international economic relations, particularly with partners in Latin America.

For Ecuador, the engagement offers an opportunity to strengthen its presence in North and West Africa, leveraging Morocco’s position as a regional economic hub.

While no formal trade agreement has yet been announced, the latest discussions suggest a clear intent to deepen cooperation through structured negotiations and sustained dialogue between public institutions and private stakeholders.
