Rabat – Morocco has donated a batch of 2,000 metric tons of fertilizer to contribute to Ghana’s food security and agricultural sustainability.

Ghanaian media reported that Ghana received Morocco’s donation during a ceremony hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on April 15.

Samuel Okudzeto-Ablakwa, Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, expressed his country’s gratitude to Morocco, emphasizing that the initiative is timely.

Reports said the decision is part of the Feed Ghana Programme (FGP) aimed at ensuring food security and promoting sustainable agriculture.

Ghana’s FM also conveyed Morocco’s readiness to support his country’s fertilizer capacity.

GhanaWeb quoted Morocco’s ambassador to Ghana, Imane Ouaadil, who said the donation marks the second batch of fertilizer support to the country.

The ambassador also reaffirmed Morocco’s commitment to Africa’s food security amid global challenges and climate change.

Ouaadil further emphasized the key role of OCP Africa, a subsidiary of the OCP Group, in helping farmers across the continent through initiatives aimed at advancing continental agriculture and food security.

Last year, Morocco reaffirmed the same commitment through its fertilizer donation program to Ghana.

The 2,000-ton fertilizer donation was part of efforts to support the West African nation’s FGP.

The program is a government-led initiative aiming to boost local farmers’ productivity, create jobs, and strengthen the country’s food security.

Morocco, through its giant fertilizer group OCP,  launched a series of similar initiatives, teaming up with African governments and other stakeholders to assist farmers and devise projects aimed at advancing food security across the continent.

Throughout the year, OCP donated tens of thousands of fertilizer shipments to many countries.

In 2022, it donated 15,000 tons of fertilizers to Rwanda in a bid to help the country increase its agricultural productivity.

In the same year, OCP supplied 13,000 tons of fertilizer at a preferential price to Gambia.

During its participation in the 2022 US-Africa Business Summit, OCP  announced its largest-ever fertilizer program, combining donations and reduced-price supplies  to deliver over 500 kilotons of fertilizer to African farmers.
