Morocco Crowned African Wheelchair Basketball Champion After Dominant Campaign

The Moroccan men’s national wheelchair basketball team clinched the African Wheelchair Basketball Championship title after a convincing 59-42 victory over South Africa in the final held Thursday evening in Luanda.

With this triumph, Morocco secured its third continental title and booked a place at the 2026 Wheelchair Basketball World Championship, scheduled to take place in Ottawa next September.

The history of the triumph

Assistant coach Abdelhak El Hadaoui praised the team’s outstanding performance throughout the tournament, emphasizing their dominance from start to finish. Morocco showcased its superiority with emphatic victories over Egypt (76-21), South Africa (56-40), and Senegal(44-40) during the group stage.

The Atlas Lions continued their impressive run in the knockout rounds, defeating Kenya in the quarter-finals before overcoming Senegal once again in the semi-finals with a 55-47 win.

Victory through discipline

El Hadaoui stressed that Morocco, a consistent podium finisher over the past decade, entered the competition well-prepared and determined to retain its African crown. He also commended the players for their patriotism, discipline, and unwavering commitment throughout the tournament.

The Moroccan team arrived in Angola as defending champions, having won the previous edition in Ghana. Their latest success adds to their 2017 title in Durban, further cementing their status as a powerhouse in African wheelchair basketball.
