Moment drunk HGV driver swerves across dual carriageway before he's arrested for being SIX times over limit as police find whisky bottles in his cab

Published: 18:23, 15 July 2026 | Updated: 18:25, 15 July 2026 A drunk HGV driver swerved across a dual carriageway before being arrested for being six times over limit. 55-year-old Darek Smagiel was stopped by the police with several bottles of whiskey found inside his Iveco HGV lorry. He provided a roadside breath test and blew 221 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, more than six times the legal limit of 35 microgrammes.  The police stopped the lorry on the A14 at Fenstanton on Monday afternoon. Smagiel has since been sentenced after members of the public reported his dangerous driving to police.  At Cambridge Magistrates’ Court yesterday, Smagiel, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to drink driving and dangerous driving.  Cambridgeshire Police officers stopped 55-year-old Darek Smagiel's lorry and found several bottles of whiskey inside After taking a roadside breath test, he was found to be more than six times the legal limit of 35 microgrammes He was sentenced to 12 months in prison, suspended for two years, and was disqualified from driving for three years.  PC James Allen, from the Road Policing Unit, said: 'Smagiel's driving fell far below the standards of a careful and competent driver.  'He put members of the public at risk of a serious collision.  'I would like to thank members of the public who called in to report his driving which has ensured he is now off the roads for a considerable time.'
