Moment driver hits 80mph just before killing 15-year-old e-scooter rider in crash that threw him 90 feet as he is jailed for seven years

By WILL HALLOWELL, NEWS REPORTER Published: 01:02, 26 June 2026 | Updated: 01:04, 26 June 2026 This is the moment a driver hit 80mph just before killing a 15-year-old e-scooter rider in a crash that threw him 90 feet.  A judge heard that Cameron Langley-McColm was travelling at more than three times the speed limit when he killed teenager Kieran Aaron Byrne.  The motorist has now been jailed for seven-and-a-half years for dangerous driving.  On the evening of July 8, 2023, Langley-McColm was driving his white BMW Sport along Heath Road in Coxheath, Kent when his vehicle struck Kieran, who was riding an e-scooter, Kent Police said.  The defendant had claimed that Kieran had swerved in front of him as he tried to overtake - but a police investigation 'proved this was a lie and that the victim had been in the right hand lane all along'.  A spokesperson for the force said: 'The teenager was thrown 28 metres from the point of impact. 'Officers attended, along with paramedics, but Kieran was pronounced dead at the scene.  'A second boy, who was 14 at the time, was also clipped by the speeding car but suffered no serious injuries. 'Officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit led inquiries and through CCTV footage and witness statements, they identified the 23-year-old was speeding moments before the collision. 'Langley-McColm was driving at almost three times the speed limit on the 30mph road and on the wrong side of the road. 'The investigation also proved that Kieran and the second boy had been travelling on the right hand side of the road before the collision and had not swerved in front of the car as Langley-McColm claimed. 'On January 13 this year Langley-McColm, of Coombe Road in Maidstone, was charged with causing death by dangerous driving.  'He was sentenced at Maidstone Crown Court to prison for seven years and six months. He also received an 11-year driving ban. Detective Constable David Holmes, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: 'The death of Kieran Bryne was tragic and completely avoidable. Kieran was previously described by his family as a 'beautiful' and 'talented' schoolboy The defendant claimed that Kieran had swerved in front of his as he tried to overtake him  'Cameron Langley-McColm was driving at more than 82mph in a 30mph and had no consideration for other road users. His actions were reckless and unnecessary.  'As a result, a young boy lost his life and a family has been left devastated. 'Driving at speed increases the risk of death or serious injury and we will continue to crack down on motorists who endanger others.'  Kieran was previously described by his family as a 'beautiful' and 'talented' schoolboy.  In the days after his death, Kieran's sister-in-law Rachel Byrne paid tribute to him on social media. In a Facebook post she wrote: 'On July 8, my beautiful, talented, hilariously sarcastic, clever, highly intelligent and funny 15-year-old brother in-law passed away in an unfortunate road traffic accident. 'We have had the most horrific 48 hours that no family should ever have to deal with, whatever your opinions are on what happened and who was wrong in this tragedy, I ask you kindly to remember, that last night my mother in-law lost her baby boy, as did his father, my husband lost his baby brother, my brother in-law lost his little brother and best friend, my step children lost their uncle and best friend. 'We as a family unite and are strong and will stick together whilst we deal with this tragic turn of events. Kent Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) attended the incident on Heath Road towards Coxheath near Maidstone, Kent around 10pm on Saturday 'We thank you for all your flowers and love we have received, you do not understand how it has helped us. 'Kieran Aaron Byrne we will miss you and love you always. Fly high our angel.' Kent Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) attended the incident on Heath Road towards Coxheath near Maidstone, Kent around 10pm on July 8.
