Moment 600ft ferry carrying 100 passengers crunches into a cargo ship in head-on crash off Greek holiday island of Crete

By PERKIN AMALARAJ, FOREIGN NEWS REPORTER Published: 13:08, 21 July 2026 | Updated: 13:26, 21 July 2026 This is the moment a 600ft-long ferry carrying 100 passengers crashed into a cargo ship in a head-on collision in Crete.  Footage taken today showed the two massive vessels careening towards each other off the Greek holiday island.  At least one of the ships was heard blaring its horn, warning of the impending crash.  A loud crunch was heard as the bow of the ferry crumbled the front of the cargo's port side.  In the background, police sirens were heard, while the cargo vessel was seen floating backwards following the crash.  The incident happened in the Crete port of Souda. The ferry, named by local media as Elyros, was carrying 100 passengers, along with 32 cars and 74 trucks.  The cargo ship, the Iosif K., meanwhile was carrying 84 trucks.  No injuries were reported following the crash.  Footage taken today showed the two massive vessels careening towards each other off the Greek holiday island The incident happened in the Crete port of Souda Both vehicles have been grounded at the port, amid an investigation into the incident.  Neither will be allowed to sail until they are inspected and given a seaworthiness certificate by marine authorities.  It comes days after a British tourist was found dead on a cruise ship off the coast of Crete.  The 79-year-old man was found unresponsive on the deck of the ship and was given first aid, but was eventually rushed to the hospital, where he died last week.   The incident unfolded as the cruise was sailing near Crete, forcing the vessel to dock on the Greek island, according to the local coast guard. The Chania Port Authority is conducting the preliminary investigation into the Briton's death and has ordered an autopsy to determine his cause of death. It is currently unclear whether the man was on the cruise alone or with family.
