Police put her mobile number under surveillance, and her last location was traced to near Malviya Inter College in Bachhaon which is also in the Varanasi area. During the search, the student's mother and cousin learnt that Vivek Chaubey, a man known to her and a resident of Cholapur, was also missing. A key to his rented room in Bachhaon was found in a bag kept at the house of his maternal uncle in Seekhar village, Mirzapur. The student's mother took the key to the rented accommodation. When she opened the locked room, she found her daughter's decomposed body in the bathroom amid a strong foul smell.
