The Minnesota Vikings added Cincinnati’s Jake Golday in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft, taking him with the 51st pick. He was the fifth linebacker selected. The Vikings landed Golday at No. 51 moments after trading back two spots in the second round, sending No. 49 and No. 196 to Carolina for No. 51 and No. 159. Golday wasn’t in the Big 12 for a long time, but he most certainly had a good time. After three seasons at Central Arkansas, his breakout FBS season in 2024 with Cincinnati made it clear that he was a special talent among Big 12 linebackers. The 6-foot-4, 240-pound junior had the second-most tackles for the Bearcats (58) and was ranked as the second-highest linebacker prospect (80.7) by Pro Football Focus. His redshirt senior season was even more prolific. Golday led the Bearcats in total tackles (105), assisted tackles (66) and sacks (3.5). He ranked second in solo tackles with 39 (one shy of the team-leading 40). Golday also earned a handful of Defensive Player of the Week awards, academic recognitions and even an All-Big 12 honorable mention. Golday’s edge, though, is his versatility. He played edge rusher at Central Arkansas before transitioning to off-ball linebacker at Cincinnati, where he became a slot specialist. Golday uses his combination of size and speed to shut down passing lanes from sideline to sideline. He is a true sparkplug who plays physical defense and reliably brings ball carriers down. Golday’s flexibility in a defensive scheme would make him an asset in the modern NFL, where he can match the speed of receivers, disrupt routes and otherwise account for spread offenses. It’s clear Golday is also a well-liked teammate and a leader on the field. Golday was an unranked recruit out of high school, but by his third season at Central Arkansas, he led the team with 84 tackles, 4.5 sacks and seven tackles for loss. He even had four double-digit tackle games, including a career-high 14 that he matched in 2025 against Bowling Green. Golday would make a good fit as a hybrid Mike linebacker. Golday ranked No. 48 on Dane Brugler’s top 300 big board. Here’s what Brugler had to say about him in his annual NFL Draft guide: “Golday was asked to operate in a ton of space in college (almost like a nickel defender), which helped showcase his gazelle-like speed to chase down the ball anywhere on the field. His mental processing took a clear jump in 2025, which was the hope during his second season as a full-time overhang linebacker. Though he had the explosive athleticism to get away with false steps in the Big 12, it won’t be that easy in the NFL. He is trending in the right direction against the pass, but his coverage recognition isn’t yet a strength.” Still unrefined, but his size, speed and ascending skill set are all encouraging.
