Ajansının (AA) "Turizmin Gölgesinde Kentler" başlıklı dosya haberinin ikinci ve son bölümünde, turizm faaliyetleri nedeniyle yerel halkın ihtiyaçlarını karşılayamaz hale gelen turistik kentlerdeki sorunlar ele alındı. Dünya genelinde birçok şehir, her yıl milyonlarca ziyaretçiyi ağırlayarak küresel turizmin başlıca merkezleri haline geliyor. Ancak bu yoğun ilgi, ciddi sorunları da beraberinde getiriyor. Turist akını nedeniyle turistik kentlerde yaşayan yerel halk, günlük yaşamlarını sürdürmekte zorlanır hale geliyor. Sokakların sürekli dolu olması ve şehrin yapısının turistlerin ihtiyaçlarına göre değişmesi, yerel halkın yaşam kalitesini düşürüyor. Konukseverlik "turist karşıtlığına" dönüşüyor. Öte yandan, şehir sakinlerinin tepkisi yalnızca kalabalıkla sınırlı değil. Artan kira ve yaşam maliyetleri, yerel dokunun turistik yatırımlar uğruna zarar görmesi, gürültü ve çevre kirliliği gibi etkenler de rahatsızlığı derinleştiriyor. Dünya genelinde, özellikle Avrupa başta olmak üzere bazı şehirlerde düzenlenen protestolarda birçok şehir sakini, turistleri "evlerine dönmeye" çağırıyor. Buna karşın turizm, yerel ekonomiler için vazgeçilmez bir gelir kaynağı olmayı sürdürüyor. Yerel yönetimler, turizmin sağladığı ekonomik katkı ile şehir sakinlerinin yaşam kalitesini koruma arasında denge kurmakta zorlanıyor. Danimarka Aalborg Üniversitesi Kültür ve Küresel Çalışmalar Bölümünden Profesör Carina Ren, AA muhabirine konuştu. İnsanlığın ticaret, savaşlar, koloni faaliyetleri ve hac gibi dini sebeplerle tarih boyunca seyahat ettiğini kaydeden Ren, İkinci Dünya Savaşı'nın sonunda modern turizm faaliyetlerinin başladığını ifade etti. Ren, bugün turizmle ilgili en büyük sorunun turistler ile yerel halka sağlanan koşullar arasında bir "denge kurmak" olduğunu belirtti. Profesör Ren, "Karşı karşıya olduğumuz en büyük zorluk, turizmi yerel halka gürültü ve pahalılık getiren bir sorun olmaktan kurtarıp yaşam kalitesini yükselten bir modele dönüştürebilmektir." dedi.
