Michigan State's Tom Izzo mourning the death of his 100-year-old mother

After serving as the Michigan State men's basketball head coach for more than 30 years with no sign of retirement, it's safe to say that Tom Izzo is a permanent member of the Spartans family.  Now, the coach is mourning the loss of one of his beloved family members, his mother Dorothy Izzo, who has died at the age of 100. According to her published obituary, Dorothy died on May 19 at Touchmark Senior Living in Appleton, Wisconsin. She had just turned 100 years old on May 13. Dorothy was born and raised in Norway, Michigan, before moving to Iron Mountain, where Tom grew up. Dorothy received a nursing degree in Chicago and was hired as a practicing registered nurse at the Veterans Hospital in Iron Mountain. "Because she outlived all but one of her sister-in-laws, she became a parent figure to many nieces and nephews." In what comes as no surprise, her obituary also states that Izzo's mother "loved watching sports, and even more so if it involved family." She was also a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church and was active in the choir and other church activities. In Appleton, where Dorothy lived in her later years, she was a member of First United Methodist Church. Dorothy is survived by four children, six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, a son-in-law and a sister-in-law. Her husband and Tom's dad, Carl, died in 2015.
