Kamden Lopati, a four-star prospect from West Valley City, Utah, committed to the Wolverines on Tuesday. Lopati, the No. 122 prospect in the Rivals industry rankings, became Michigan’s top quarterback target after Whittingham arrived in December despite being committed to Illinois. He decommitted from the Illini earlier this week. At 6 feet 2 and 225 pounds, Lopati has the size and mobility to excel in the offense of Jason Beck, who followed Whittingham from Utah to Michigan. Lopati threw for 2,671 yards and 34 touchdowns last season while adding 730 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground. Lopati is the No. 9 quarterback in the Class of 2027. Peter Bourque, the No. 6 quarterback in the class, was committed to Michigan under the previous coaching staff but reopened his recruitment after the firing of Sherrone Moore. All signs pointed to Lopati as the quarterback Michigan’s new staff wanted in this class, and the Wolverines worked quickly to land his commitment. Lopati is Michigan’s sixth commitment for the 2027 class and one of the most important prospects on the board for a program that’s reshuffling its quarterbacks behind starter Bryce Underwood, who is entering his second season. The Wolverines have two freshman quarterbacks on campus in Tommy Carr and Brady Smigiel and a second-year player in Chase Herbstreit. There’s no heir apparent to Underwood and probably won’t be one anytime soon, but Lopati will give Michigan another young quarterback to develop for the future. His familiarity with Whittingham and Michigan’s offense could work in his favor as the Wolverines tailor their roster to the new staff and scheme. Spot the pattern.
