Mets sign catcher Luis Torrens to 2-year extension

The New York Mets and catcher Luis Torrens have agreed to a two-year, $11.5 million contract extension for 2027-2028, according to league sources. Torrens had been slated to hit free agency this winter.Acquired in a minor trade with the Yankees to solidify the Mets’ catching depth in May 2024, Torrens has been one of the game’s best backups over the past two years. He’s been a defensive weapon for the Mets: With the club, he’s caught 37 of 84 attempted basestealers, or 44 percent. That’s essentially double the league-average caught-stealing rate during that time.Torrens has also ranked 16th among catchers in framing runs saved while with the Mets.Advertisement
