Their losing streak reached 12 games on Tuesday, their worst in April since 1962 and their longest overall skid since 2002. The team’s longest losing streak in franchise history is 17 from May 21 to June 6, 1962. The watch is on. Along the way, the Mets keep setting the bar for the most excruciating loss to date. Their 5-3 loss to the Minnesota Twins at Citi Field is a top candidate. They held their first three-run lead in just over two weeks after Francisco Lindor hit a three-run home run in the third inning. Their starting pitcher, Nolan McLean, was perfect through the first five innings. And yet, the Mets still managed to lose. Devin Williams heard the loudest boos. He faced five batters in the ninth inning and failed to record an out. After blowing a save on Sunday, he fared even worse on Tuesday. In a nightmarish outing, Williams walked the first two batters. When Kody Clemens put a bunt down, Mark Vientos’ throw to third base was too late. Then, with the infield in, Luke Keaschall hit a single to make it 4-3. After that, and with the bases still loaded, Williams walked Matt Wallner. Worse than boos, the crowd showered journeyman reliever Austin Warren with sarcastic chants of “M-V-P” after he recorded the first out of the ninth inning. With each out, they kept the chants going. The crowd erupted when Warren didn’t give up another run. It almost goes without saying at this point, but it’s imperative for the Mets to turn things around over their nine-game homestand, which started Tuesday. After the Twins, the Mets face the lowly Colorado Rockies and Washington Nationals. It’s not quite late April, and the stakes are high. The Mets, a team that entered with expectations as high as their payroll, are 7-16. People within the Mets have tried to strike the right mix of urgency and optimism. A couple of hours before first pitch, Mets owner Steve Cohen described his feelings as “concerned, but calm and focused.” Inside the Mets’ clubhouse before the game, a copy of The Coffee Bean, a 112-page book, appeared in each locker. Based on the notes from the publisher, the message is about making a “positive change” rather than being a “victim of your environment.” Well, the outside noise surrounding the Mets had bordered on maximum levels of loudness — especially concerning manager Carlos Mendoza. Facing scrutiny over his job security, Mendoza said before the game that he had received support from Cohen over text exchanges. “Steve has been great,” Mendoza said. “It’s good to hear from him and how supportive he’s been.” Mendoza compared the stretch to the Mets’ poor play in the first half of 2024, a time when he said he also heard positive reinforcement from Cohen. “But also you understand that it’s a business,” Mendoza said. “We gotta see results on the field. There’s nothing new. But it’s always great to hear from the owner, especially when you’re going through moments like this.” It’s a time when nothing is working. Not lineup shuffling. Not rotation changes. Not optimism. Spot the pattern. Connect the terms Find the hidden link between sports terms
