The end of the scorching heatwave which has broken temperature records across the UK is officially in sight. Wales experienced its hottest May day ever on Tuesday as temperatures climbed to a scorching 32.9C in Cardiff . The heatwave brought thunder and lightening to a number of areas last night after days of sunny weather and hot temperatures. The west of the country saw the worst of the storms, with thunder and lightening reported in Llandeilo, Llanelli and Capel Hendre. At one point, around 1,500 customers were left without power due to high voltage faults during thunderstorms in Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire on Wednesday afternoon. Always keep on top of the latest Welsh news with our newsletter While the storms have brought no immediate ease in temperatures and the heatwave is continuing, it does look set to end on Friday, according to the Met Office. A heatwave is officially defined as three consecutive days at or above a set temperature. For the majority of Wales, temperatures need to be above 25C for three consecutive days for the heatwave threshold to be reached. In parts of South-East Wales, this is slightly higher at 26C. On Wednesday , an official heatwave was declared in eight parts of the country, with more areas expected to follow. This threshold will continued to be met for many on Thursday, with highs of 28C predicted. The Met Office forecast for Thursday is: "A dry and sunny start to the morning. "A very warm afternoon to come, though the sunshine turning increasingly hazy as the day progresses. An isolated shower may be possible. Breezy, with some mist along the coast at times. Maximum temperature 28C." On Friday, temperatures will dip too low to meet the heatwave threshold. The forecast states: "Some low cloud first thing, with perhaps an isolated light shower. Skies brightening by lunchtime, with plenty of sunshine developing. Generally feeling fresher than of late. Maximum temperature 24C." As we move in to the weekend, the settled and fine weather seen of late will make way for more unsettled conditions. Temperatures will also continue to cool and get closer to the average for the time of year. The Met Office outlook for the weekend says: "A bright start to Saturday, but heavy rain moving in later on in the day. Sunshine and showers for Sunday and then potentially wetter and winder on Monday. Feeling cooler." Get daily breaking news updates on your phone by joining our WhatsApp community here .
