Matt Vickers takes aim at Labour hypocrisy as Keir Starmer faces growing calls from MPs to resign: 'Suddenly grown a backbone!'

Matt Vickers has launched a scathing attack on the dozens of MPs calling for Sir Keir Starmer to resign, criticising their decision to "suddenly grow a backbone" now their "jobs are on the line".

Speaking to GB News, the Conservative MP highlighted the lack of rebellion against the Prime Minister on issues including the Winter Fuel Allowance and the grooming gangs inquiry.

Mr Vickers told GB News host Martin Daubney: "The one thing that is interesting is you've got all these Labour MPs coming out now saying it's the right thing to do for him to go, it's terrible, he's lost the confidence of the country.

"Where were they when he was removing the Winter Fuel Allowance from those pensioners? Where were they when they had to walk through those lobbies and vote against the grooming gangs inquiry?"

The Tory MP argued: "They didn't really care about holding the Prime Minister to a standard.

"But now their jobs are on the line, now they've seen election results that could cost them their all in Parliament next time, all of a sudden they've grown some backbone and they're willing to stand up to this man. It's tragic, it's really tragic."

Mr Vickers also highlighted Sir Keir's own hypocrisy and how he "always had such a high moral standard" against Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak when he was leader of the opposition.

He told the People's Channel: "He was of such a high moral standard. There's some killer script out there of him at the despatch box talking about 'will it be his ministers and his MPs who get rid of him, will it be the public, will he give them the opportunity or will he just resign and do the right thing?'

"I think he's probably reached that point now, looking at the damage that's been done to the country."

Mr Vickers also argued significant damage was done to Sir Keir's position following the Lord Peter Mandelson scandal.

He said: "And the damage that's been done internationally for people who are looking at an ambassador he appointed, the highest and most prestigious diplomatic post this country has to offer, given to a man who'd been sacked from Government twice, who was linked to one of the most vile paedophiles ever to walk the earth.

"His judgment's been undermined, the things he's inflicted on the country are totally damaging."

The Tory MP criticised the Labour Government as a whole over the last two years for "going completely against the perspective that they stand for".

He explained: "If you arrive in Parliament and the minute you arrive there, you do things that are completely against the perspective that you claim to stand for, the idea that you're going to stand up for the pensioners, you're going to stand up for the veterans, you're going to stand up for all these groups of people.

"And actually, every single opportunity you fail to stand up to a Prime Minister who is doing untold harm. The reality is that this Government has had real consequences for people out there. It is a disaster for this country. This thing has to end."

Pressed by Martin on how long he believes Sir Keir has left as PM, Mr Vickers admitted he was unsure of the remaining timeline.

Mr Vickers concluded: "I'm not sure, I'm really not sure, because there is not many better options in the mix.

"I've heard people out there celebrating the fact that they think he's going, it doesn't get any better with Wes Streeting, and it doesn't get any better with Angela.

"It certainly doesn't get any better with Ed Miliband, but that's the choices that this country is going to know.

"In fact, the choice is what the Labour Party is going to face and get to make without without the permission of the Great British public."
