Mardan mine tragedy

Mining is considered one of the most unprotected, hazardous and neglected sectors in Pakistan due to its flagrant lack of safety regulations and inadequate protocols. The consequences of such a high-risk environment regularly materialise as deeply tragic cases of miners getting trapped underground or losing their lives in mine collapse incidents and explosions. The region of Mardan in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa has now become witness to yet another unfortunate instance of systemic neglect, where nine workers lost their lives in a marble mine collapse last week. As an industry, the mining world cannot usually be completely devoid of accidents, even with the help of modern technology and thoroughly exercised safety protocols. Therefore, the acute lack of funding required for safety technology, as well as the implementation of pre-existing legislation, grossly increases the likelihood of mining accidents in Pakistan. The mining sector in K-P is meant to be protected under the KPK Mines Safety, Inspection and Regulation Act, 2019 and the Consolidated Mines Rules, 2022. Both these legislations call for increased mine safety, inspection and regulation. They are meant to enact important health standards to ensure minimum risk for mine workers. But their implementation remains confined to efforts instead of results. Mine workers often hail from poorer backgrounds in search of work that can put food on their tables. They are often untrained, unsupported and underpaid, which makes them a perfect exploitation target. Unfortunately, when we talk about those who risk their lives for national gain, these workers are often left out. Providing these mine workers with quality training, awareness of safety standards, exceptional equipment, and immediate access to emergency services when needed is a must. The government must protect its most vulnerable citizens first, before it dares lay claim to any form of digital innovation or modern advancement.
