Maddie Meyer / Getty Images Share full articleTORONTO — Maple Leafs goalie Anthony Stolarz left the ice with what appeared to be a left leg injury just 2:34 into Wednesday’s game against the Washington Capitals. After stopping a shot from distance from Capitals defenseman Cole Hutson with his left pad, Stolarz immediately hit the ice and kept his head down in pain. The 32-year-old continued to look in evident pain as he required the help of multiple teammates to leave the ice. Joseph Woll replaced Stolarz. Woll has struggled as of late, allowing 20 total goals over his last four starts. Stolarz has a lengthy injury history. He missed over two months of game action this season after sustaining an upper-body injury in a Nov. 11 game against the Boston Bruins. Stolarz also had two separate injury stints last season, his first as a Leaf. He missed a month and a half last season for a knee procedure. The domino effect from Stolarz’s injury could be felt throughout the Leafs organization. The Leafs play Thursday night against the New York Islanders, meaning Woll will likely be unavailable to start. The Leafs’ third goalie, Dennis Hildeby, also started on Wednesday for the Toronto Marlies in the AHL. That start could render him unavailable to start against the Islanders. Hildeby is also expected to be the starting goalie for the Marlies through the AHL playoffs. The onus for Thursday’s start could then fall to Artur Akhtyamov. The 24-year-old has never started an NHL game, only coming on in relief for Hildeby for just over 10 minutes in a Dec. 13 loss to the Edmonton Oilers. Akhtyamov has a .903 save percentage in 36 AHL games played this season, the most of any Marlies goalie. The Leafs goaltending depth has been considered a strength within the organization. While there was no immediate word from the Leafs on the nature of Stolarz’s injury, it is possible that depth is about to be tested late in this Leafs season. Spot the pattern.
