The son of the a major fashion chain founder has been arrested in connection with his father's death in the Spanish mountains, after the tragedy was initially ruled an accident.

Isak Andic, founder of fashion retailer Mango, died in December 2024 aged 71 after falling down a ravine while hiking in Montserrat, near Barcelona, with his family.

The initial investigation by Catalan police, the Mossos d’Esquadra, regarded the incident an accident, however the case is now being treated as a possible homicide.

The local police force today confirmed Jonathan Andic, 45, now vice-chair of the Mango board, had been arrested in relation to the incident.

A spokesman for the family confirmed he was being questioned over his father’s death, stating: "The cooperation has been, and will remain, total."

The judge set a bail of €1million (£867,000), and required the son to hand over his passport - barring him from leaving the region.

The family have expressed full confidence of Mr Andic's innocence, who police said was detained today and remains in custody.

Jonathan Andic is the eldest of Isak Andic's three children, and is among his father's heirs.

Police reportedly found no definitive evidence to explain the timeline of events that led to the fashion giant's death, but that "a series of clues" had lead them toward the possibility of a homicide.

As a result, the judge overseeing the case changed Jonathan Andic’s official status from witness to possible suspect in September last year.

A spokesman for the Andic family issued a statement at the time, saying: “The Andic family has not, and will not comment on Isak Andic’s death.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

“However, they wish to show their respect for the ongoing investigations, and will continue to cooperate with the relevant authorities, as they have done so far.

"They are also confident that this process will be concluded as soon as possible, and that Jonathan Andic’s innocence will be proved.”

Isak Andic, born in Istanbul, moved to Catalonia in the northeast of Spain in the 1960s, where he then founded Mango in 1984.

The brand grew into one of Europe's leading fast fashion outlets, with 2,900 stores in 120 markets around the globe.

At the time of his death, he was non-executive chairman of Mango, with a net worth of $4.5bn (£3.6bn), according to Forbes.

Jonathan Andic and his two sisters jointly own 95 per cent of the company, with 5 per cent owned by chief executive and president Toni Ruiz.

Mr Andic's 2024 death prompted tributes from politicians, journalists and the fashion world.
