Shaun Botterill/Getty Images Share article23Manchester United and Michael Carrick have reached a broad agreement for the Englishman to become the club’s permanent head coach. Work is continuing between all parties to finalise contracts for Carrick and his backroom staff, after a two-year deal with the option to extend by 12 months was proposed by the club to the former midfielder. The Athletic reported the initial offer earlier on Friday after co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe gave the go-ahead following an executive committee meeting this week, in which chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox made the recommendation for the Englishman to get the job full-time. The club had previously been weighing up their options, considering Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola and Aston Villa’s Unai Emery, with staff members making background checks on several candidates. Carrick, who made 464 appearances and won five Premier League titles in 12 years at United as a player, already had the public backing of multiple members of his squad, however. Kobbie Mainoo told Sky Sports after a 3-2 victory over Liverpool, “we want to die for him (Carrick) on the pitch”, while Casemiro said that he “completely deserves” the permanent job. The 44-year-old has overseen 10 wins, three draws and two losses in charge of the team. He is in his second spell as interim manager, briefly taking over after the departure of Ole Gunnar Solksjaer in November 2021, winning two matches and drawing one. He left the club after his initial stint and was given his first permanent managerial position in October 2022 by Championship club Middlesbrough. With the team 21st when he was appointed, Carrick guided the side to fourth place and the play-offs, losing in the semi-finals to Coventry City. Middlesbrough finished eighth in 2024 and 10th in 2025. Spot the pattern. Connect the terms Find the hidden link between sports terms
