Man Utd's De Ligt to miss World Cup after back surgeryImage source, Getty ImagesImage caption, Manchester United's Matthijs de Ligt pictured during his most recent comeback attempt in AprilBySimon StoneManchester United reporterPublished3 minutes agoManchester United's Dutch defender Matthijs de Ligt will miss the 2026 World Cup after finally accepting defeat in his battle to avoid surgery on a long-standing back problem.The 26-year-old has not played since the victory at Crystal Palace on 30 November.At the time, then-United manager Ruben Amorim said it was a minor issue and expected the Dutchman to be back for the home game with West Ham four days later.That did not happen and despite numerous optimistic messages, and current manager Michael Carrick repeatedly stating the club were not thinking about an operation.But De Ligt's most recent attempt at running on Carrington's training pitches last month has not led to a positive outcome."Matthijs de Ligt has undergone successful surgery to address a back injury," said a United statement."Having diligently worked throughout his rehabilitation process, the decision was made that a corrective procedure was the best course of action."The Netherlands start their World Cup campaign against Japan on 14 June and United say they do not expect De Ligt to be back until the "early stages of the 2026-27 season".It is understood that does not include pre-season for the Old Trafford side, which starts with a trip to Helsinki to face Wrexham on 18 July, although it is possible he may travel with the remainder of United's squad to continue his rehabilitation work."Since November I have done everything, pushing myself in every session and exploring every option, to get back to doing what I love, playing football," said De Ligt."I am grateful to everyone who has supported me throughout a difficult period in my career."I remain as determined as ever to repre...
