New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani defended police, prisons and jails during a Friday appearance on "The Clay Cane Show," putting distance between his administration and the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) platform as political streamer Steven Bonnell, known online as "Destiny," told Fox News Digital that Mamdani would likely govern moderately while helping more radical candidates gain power.

Bonnell said Mamdani’s control of a prominent and politically secure office could allow him to build support for other socialist lawmakers without implementing the DSA’s most radical proposals himself.

"I think that Mamdani holds a very powerful, very safe office where he can be entrenched for a long time in order to ‘hold the door open’ for other, (arguably) more radical lawmakers in the future," he said.

Mamdani addressed his differences with the DSA after host Clay Cane noted that the organization's platform calls for abolishing institutions including prisons, the Senate and the presidency.

"I would say, especially when it comes to public safety, I've been very clear that we have our police force, we have prisons, we have jails [and] the purpose of these is also to ensure that we are delivering safety and justice hand in hand. And what that means is that New Yorkers need not choose between the two," Mamdani said.

He also credited the NYPD with driving down violent crime while emphasizing that public safety should not come at the expense of justice.

"I am proud of our police department for their work in delivering the lowest levels of murders and shootings and even the number of shooting victims in recorded history over seven months over this year," Mamdani said.

MAMDANI WALKS BACK PLAN TO INCREASE NYPD HEADCOUNT FOLLOWING DSA PRESSURE

The NYPD reported 381 shooting incidents, 462 shooting victims and 149 murders during the first seven months of 2026, the lowest record totals for that period. Major crime declined 6.6% compared with the same period in 2025.

The position contrasted with the DSA's official platform, which describes defunding law enforcement and weakening police unions as steps toward eliminating police and prisons.

DSA co-chair Megan Romer defended the organization's approach to police and prisons during an interview with New Yorker editor David Remnick Monday on "The New Yorker Radio Hour." Romer rejected eliminating law enforcement, while defining defunding as redirecting department money into social programs.

"I am not in favor of getting rid of police entirely tomorrow," Romer said. "I think it means taking funding back and moving it elsewhere, right?"

"It's not communities with cops on every corner. It's communities that have good schools, good jobs, good park systems, good recreation for their teenagers, things like that," she added.

DSA CO-CHAIR PUSHES BACK ON SOVIET UNION COMPARISONS, WANTS PRISONS TO BE 'LESS NECESSARY'

Bonnell predicted to Fox News Digital that the demands of running the nation’s largest city would keep Mamdani from applying the DSA’s policies, even as the mayor used his popularity to promote other socialists.

"As someone who has to actually govern, though, I don't see him applying any of the more radical DSA positions," he said. "Rather, he'll govern moderately, remain decently popular, market well, then use that position and popularity to promote others."

Republican New York City Councilwoman Vickie Paladino's office told Fox News Digital that Mamdani’s remarks were intended to obscure an agenda that remained central to the DSA.

"Mamdani is politically savvy and understands that DSA messaging on police and prison abolition has been embarrassing and deeply problematic for Democrat candidates heading into the midterms," Paladino said. "As the top DSA figure in the country, he’s trying to deploy some smokescreen on behalf of the party, nothing more."

"Make no mistake, abolishing police and prisons is now a baseline policy position for the DSA, regardless of what Mamdani is saying at the moment," she added.

Despite distancing his administration from that platform, Mamdani praised NYC-DSA during the interview for helping elect minority candidates.

"And I think to me, one thing I've appreciated about New York City DSA is that it has been one of the engines behind the creation of a new generation of Black and Brown leadership, the likes [of which] we haven't seen in quite some time," he said.

Fox News Digital reached out to Mamdani’s office, the national DSA and NYC-DSA for comment on whether the mayor’s position conflicts with the organization’s platform, but did not immediately receive a response.
