Major motorway closed 'for most of the day' after road workers find suspected human remains

Published: 11:42, 4 August 2026 | Updated: 11:59, 4 August 2026 A major motorway will be closed for the majority of the day after the discovery of suspected human remains.  Road workers told police that they found the remains close to a bridge between junctions 3 and 4 of the M67 in Tameside, Greater Manchester, on Monday night.  Officers were called shortly 11pm and have begun a probe to 'understand the circumstances behind the incident'.  A police presence has remained at the scene throughout Tuesday morning. The M67, situated east of Manchester, was initially closed in both directions but the westbound carriageway opened earlier this morning. The route eastbound between Hyde and Hattersley will remain closed for 'most of the day' as officers carry out inquiries. National Highways urged drivers to avoid the area.  A spokesperson from Greater Manchester Police read: 'Officers were called shortly after 11pm on Monday August 3 2026 by road workers, who made the discovery close to a bridge between junctions three and four.  'We are working with specialist teams to understand the circumstances behind this incident. The M67 in Tameside, Greater Manchester, was shut after the discovery of humans remains near a bridge between junctions 3 and 4 'The road will be closed between junctions three and four while detectives carry out their investigation. Please continue to avoid the area and we will provide updates when we have them.'
