London lidos have experienced a wave of antisocial behaviour that has been described as "concerning", forcing the summer hotspots to impose stringent security measures.
Break-ins, brawls and alcohol-fuelled violence have marred what should be a respite from the relentless heat, with Parliament Hill Fields Lido in Hampstead Heath among the worst-affected sites, having been forced to close twice this summer.
A large-scale poolside brawl at Parliament Hill Fields Lido during the May Bank Holiday weekend broke out after a group of youths reportedly forced entry to the site.
A swimmer was left hospitalised with head wounds after being struck with a wine bottle stolen from the on-site café.
Two men were arrested but subsequently released for lack of evidence.
The lido's manager disclosed "brawls break out every summer" and blades have previously been discovered concealed in visitors' bags.
A waitress told the Daily Mail: "They stole a wine bottle from us and smashed it on this guy's head. A lot of them were really drunk and they pushed a lifeguard in. The man was bleeding across his head."
She added: "If I was here with my kids (when the fight broke out), it would have been really concerning."
Following the violent episode, the City of London Corporation introduced tighter controls, including mandatory parental accompaniment for under-16s, random bag inspections, identity verification, and extra security personnel.
Photographs also revealed newly erected 10-ft walls designed to prevent intruders from scaling the perimeter.
Despite these measures, another altercation reportedly erupted as visitors endured queues lasting more than 40 minutes and the lido was ultimately shut on two consecutive evenings at the end of June owing to disruptive conduct.
Disorder was not limited to Parliament Hill.

Footage from Ruislip Lido showed crowds swimming beneath red warning flags, while nearby at Hampstead Heath's Model Boating Pond, a protected wildlife habitat, swimmers ignored no-bathing signs, disturbing nesting birds with loud music and ball games.
Leisure operator Better shows 524,988 people visited the London Fields, Charlton and Oasis sites between June and August 2025, a 30 per cent jump on the previous year.
At Tooting Bec Lido, Britain's largest open-air pool, wristbands are mandatory and up to six security guards patrol on peak days when attendance exceeds 3,300.
Jem Collins, founder of the online guide All The Lidos, attributed the trouble to fair-weather visitors rather than year-round swimmers.
She said: "It got hot in May and it really hasn't stopped. You have 500 to 1,000 people queuing outside of a pool, getting hot, and waiting to get in. That's when tensions start to rise and things start to fizz."
Britain's record-breaking drought, with some parts of the country enduring 59 rainless days, and the sixth heatwave of 2026, with temperatures expected to reach 38C tomorrow, have driven unprecedented numbers to London's outdoor swimming spots.
Speaking of the incident at Parliament Hill Fields Lido in May, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: "At around 16:56hrs on Monday, 25 May, officers were called to reports of an altercation at Parliament Hill Fields Lido, Camden. Officers attended the scene and located a 15-year-old boy and a man in his 40s with minor injuries.
"A boy, aged 17 and a man, aged 25 were arrested on suspicion of affray. Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting CAD5578/25MAY, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
