Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) have taken drastic action with one of their other sporting franchises, the Boston Red Sox, after dismissing team manager Alex Cora and five members of his coaching staff. The baseball side has endured a woeful start to the new campaign, currently sitting on a 10-17 record (10 wins, 17 losses) and despite posting a thumping 17-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday, the call was made to relieve Cora of his duties, along with his backroom staff. A former Red Sox player himself, Cora assumed the role in October 2017 and made an immediate impact, clinching the World Series in 2018. He will be succeeded by Chad Tracy, the manager for Triple-A Worcester, on a temporary basis, reports the Liverpool Echo . In a statement, FSG chief and Liverpool FC principal owner John Henry said: "Alex Cora led this organization to one of the greatest seasons in Red Sox history in 2018, and for that, and the many years that followed, he will always have our deepest gratitude. He has had a lasting impact on this team and on this city. He has led on and off the field in so many important ways. FOLLOW OUR LIVERPOOL FB PAGE! Latest Reds news and more on our dedicated Facebook page "These decisions are never easy, but this one is especially difficult given what Alex has meant to the Red Sox since the day he arrived. I want to thank Alex, our coaches, and their families for everything they have given to this organization. They have been part of this club in a way that goes beyond the field, and they will always have our respect and gratitude." Following Cora's dismissal, Saturday's 16-run triumph represents the biggest winning margin in any Major League manager's final match in charge during the modern era of the sport. It also marks the first occasion the Red Sox have axed a manager mid-season since Jimy Williams suffered the same fate back in August 2001. FSG owns a host of global sporting franchises, including Liverpool FC, the Boston Red Sox and the Pittsburgh Penguins, as well as teams competing in NASCAR racing and the TMRW Golf League (TGL). FSG have owned Liverpool since 2010, overseeing two Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy. But the group has come under scrutiny from supporters recently due to the planned increase in ticket prices. Supporters have held protests over the decision, with yellow cards seen inside Anfield during their 3-1 win over Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday. There has also been question marks over transfers, with the big-money moves for Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike, among others, not bearing fruit under Arne Slot this season. The Reds sit fourth in the Premier League with four games left and will finish the campaign without a trophy after their title defence evaporated.
