Liverpool started brightly at the Etihad on Saturday but didn’t take their chances and wilted after Erling Haaland fired City ahead from the penalty spot six minutes before the break. Haaland went on to complete his hat-trick with Antoine Semenyo also scoring as City raced into a 4-0 lead prior to the hour mark. Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai said after the match that “the fighting spirit wasn’t there enough, the mentality wasn’t there enough” to TNT Sports. Slot agreed with the Hungarian relating to how they fell apart after falling behind. “I should ask Dom what he means and in what period of time,” Slot said. “I did not feel this until the moment they scored to make it 1-0. At 1-0 we were still in the game, but twice we conceded from us having a throw-in. They are fast but those are the moments where you have to defend sharper. “The second goal was similar to one we conceded here earlier this season and again we conceded just before half time here. I missed the fighting spirit definitely in the first 10 minutes after half time. Afterwards that it was just a game where both teams accepted it was 4-0. “I missed fighting spirit in that period and the willingness to win the duel, to be there first and to make it difficult for either a pass, a cross or a finish.” Asked about Liverpool being punished for their inability to do the basics right, such as tracking runners or blocking crosses, Slot added: “If you tell me that from 15 runs City made we didn’t follow them 15 times then I don’t agree with you. “But if you simply look at the goals, I see runs not being followed, I see crosses not being blocked, I see duels not being won. Then you’re completely right, but that’s not the story of the whole game. Every single time we forget to block a cross or follow a runner then it was a goal. “You need to understand that if you are 1-0 down you have to do everything right to go in 1-0 down at half-time. It is about making sure you don’t concede again. In those 20 minutes the way we defended when we conceded the four goals is absolutely not good enough. “It’s about understanding the importance of a moment and being ruthless, even if things go against you, even if mentally you find it a bit hard. “If you play for this club being 1-0 down or 2-0 down is never an excuse not to put that effort in because then it is almost impossible to get a result when you face teams of this quality.” Liverpool’s tally of 15 defeats in all competitions this season is their most in a single campaign since Brendan Rodgers was at the helm in 2014-15. Slot must now attempt to lift his players for Wednesday’s Champions League quarter-final first leg away to Paris Saint-Germain. Asked for his message to the fans, Slot said: “We don’t want them to leave early. We have to perform better. “We have to show now that we react after a loss like this. After all the disappointments we’ve had this season the fans have always been supportive and they were even today. “They were very loud in the first half. It is up to us to react for them and for ourselves. We need to play like we did for the first 35 minutes but in moments of defending we need to be much more ruthless. “Wednesday again we face very good players again and we have to make it more difficult for them.” Spot the pattern.
