Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) helps fuel the public sector with a steady supply of graduates. It is one of the UK's largest providers of registered nurses for adult, child and mental health care, and it trains up to 600 teachers and 500 police officers or criminal justice professionals each year. It makes a significant contribution to the private sector too, with LJMU graduates behind more than 250 start-ups in the Liverpool City Region. About 60% of the intake are from the North West - more than 9,000 students on campus from the Liverpool City Region alone - making this one of the top choices for local school leavers wanting to study close to home. In today's volatile student market, application levels here are remarkably consistent. The university attracts one of the more socially diverse student intakes, with about 45% of recruits coming from postcodes that are among the 40% considered to be the most deprived. There are two campuses: Mount Pleasant, home to the faculties of business and law, and arts, professional and social studies; and City, where health, science, and engineering and technology students are based. Alongside a large undergraduate intake, there are more than 1,500 degree apprentices. LJMU backed a Charter for Change over the summer to support the teaching of English in universities and schools, calling it 'one of the foundations of British "soft power" across the world'. With study of the subject in decline - but not at LJMU where English and creative writing remain a key part of the university's subject portfolio - the campaign group claimed that English in its underpinning of our creative industries is worth £120bn annually to the Exchequer. Your browser does not support iframes. This university has stopped making bursary payments for the 2026-27 academic year to students from lower income homes. This means those from homes with annual household income of less than £25,000 will no longer receive a £500 annual payment. A small number of scholarships remain, and the Student Support Fund is still available to students who are in extreme financial difficulties in need of assistance with food costs and household bills. Energy support payments and food vouchers are also available. The Academic Excellence Scholarship pays £1,000 in each year of study to all students who gain AAA at A-level (or 144 UCAS points from three subjects) so long as academic excellence is maintained during their studies. Community Excellence Scholarships are also worth £1,000 a year to recognise achievement locally or nationally in volunteering, citizenship, sport or the performing arts, while Opportunity Scholarships are for students from black, Asian or minority ethnic backgrounds who have been involved in one of LJMU's sustained outreach programmes. Others include the lucrative Vice-Chancellor's Scholarship of up to £5,000 a year for five students. These are open to care leavers, mature students, carers, disabled and minority ethnic students from homes with an income below £25,000. The John Lennon Imagine Award pays £1,000 per academic year to students who have been in care or are estranged from their parents. The university owns no accommodation but has access to 3,800 self-catered rooms in partner accommodation. These are priced from £4,116 for a 42-week contract on a single room with shared bathroom in Marybone 1 up to £8,358 for the top en suite accommodation also on a 42-week let. Admissions, teaching and student support LJMU targets several schools and colleges in Liverpool and the wider region through several outreach programmes to drive up participation in higher education of students from groups traditionally under-represented on campus. More than half of the university's students have one or more characteristics associated with under-representation. Contextual offers can reduce standard entry requirements by two A-level grades (16 UCAS points) except for midwifery and paramedic science (which have a one-grade reduction). These offers are made to applicants who have received free school meals, been in care, have caring or parenting responsibilities, come from military families or are estranged from their parents. Students are well supported, with each getting a personal tutor. Library services offer academic skills support, and some courses have a peer mentoring service. Wellbeing advisers are first-contact points for students experiencing issues with their mental health or wellbeing. Free one-to-one counselling is offered to those who need it and the university has a range of support groups, arranges referrals to external organisations when needed and links to self-help tools. Students help to co-design campus mental health support in partnership with the university and health agencies. LJMU has opened a second sensory room on its City Campus this year to complement the existing one at Mount Pleasant. The Sensory Resource Hub provides a sanctuary for neurodivergent students and others who might be feeling overwhelmed and in need of a space to decompress, regulate their senses and recharge. The university uses two online services to ensure there is 24/7 support for students all year round. It has partnered with the SilverCloud self-help cognitive behaviour therapy programme and is also signed up to the Togetherall mental health and wellbeing programme.
