Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili has been fined for using a handheld mobile phone whilst driving on the M6 motorway.

The 25-year-old Georgian international was caught watching a video on his device while behind the wheel of his Audi in January.

Warrington Combined Court handed the Georgian a £440 fine and added six penalty points to his licence.

The keeper, who joined the Reds in 2025, must also pay £120 in costs alongside a £176 victim surcharge.

Cheshire Police officers spotted Mamardashvili holding his phone close to the steering wheel whilst travelling on the motorway on January 27.

PC Ree from Cheshire Police detailed the incident in a written statement presented to the court.

The officer wrote: "Just prior to Junction 22, I was in lane three of three when I passed a black Audi which was travelling in lane two.

"Lane one was clear of traffic, meaning that the Audi should have moved over to lane one, and this caught my attention.

"As I drove past the Audi, I noticed that the driver had his mobile phone in his hand, he was holding it near the centre of his steering wheel, and the driver appeared to be watching something on the screen whilst he was driving at motorway speed.

"When it was safe to do so, I stopped the vehicle on the hard shoulder, and I got out to speak with the driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, and I asked the male to sit in the rear of my police vehicle."

The goalkeeper provided his name and presented a Georgian driving licence as identification.

The entire traffic stop was recorded on the officer's bodyworn camera, the court heard.

Mamardashvili failed to respond to the police prosecution notice issued against him.

His case was subsequently processed through a private hearing under the Single Justice Procedure.

The goalkeeper did not enter a plea, and magistrates convicted him based on the written evidence submitted by police.

This season, the Georgian has featured 20 times for Liverpool, keeping three clean sheets whilst deputising for the injured first-choice goalkeeper Alisson.

He made 34 saves in 10 appearances in the Premier League, having joined the Reds from Valencia in Spain, where he played over 100 games.

The Georgian made his debut for Liverpool in September last year, in a 2-1 win against Southampton in the League Cup third round.
