Friday’s chastening 4-2 Premier League loss to Aston Villa laid bare the champions’ weaknesses as they suffered a 19th defeat of the season in all competitions and extended their winless streak to three games. Their hopes of Champions League qualification remain in the balance ahead of next Sunday’s final game at home to Brentford. “I can understand that, at this moment in time, they (the fans) don’t have a lot of confidence or a lot of feeling that things can be much better next season but I think then they are underestimating what a window can do, what a new start can do,” Slot said after the Villa Park defeat on Friday. “I think we know quite well what to improve. One of the things we have to improve is very obvious and I would have preferred not to talk about it here but you’re actually almost forcing me to. “If you miss nine players that can start a game of football and almost all of them are starters for us — or have been for large parts of the season — then if you add that to what you can improve in a window and add that to players that are playing for the second season in the Premier League, I think we saw that the adaptation for a few of them took some time, that will automatically lead to much more.” Liverpool signed seven first-team players last summer but some sustained injuries over their first Anfield season including Alexander Isak (fractured leg), Hugo Ekitike (Achilles tendon rupture) and Jeremie Frimpong (groin). On Friday, Captain Virgil van Dijk cancelled out Morgan Rogers’ opener early in the second half but then Slot’s side capitulated. Ollie Watkins struck twice and John McGinn curled home a fourth before Van Dijk scored his second of the night late on. “My opinion — and nobody has to agree with me — is that, even tonight, for large parts of the game we were close to a result, but when you are the better team, you need to generate more chances and score them,” Slot continued. “We cannot concede as many set-pieces as we have conceded this season.” “It is frustrating because as a manager you are responsible — if things happen time and time again you are hired to try to prevent that for the next time,” Slot added. “We scored two set-pieces here so you think if you go to any game where you score two set-pieces usually you are quite sure of a result, unless you concede three set-pieces like we did. “Against United, Chelsea and this game again we have a negative balance in set-pieces which makes it really hard if you play against equal teams like United, Chelsea and Villa are to win a game of football. “Again that was shown today, and the manner in which we conceded the 2-1. Dominik (Szoboszlai) has had a very good season and he doesn’t do it on purpose and he’s the first one who feels s— about it. But it happened and then afterwards we really struggled to find any momentum.” Spot the pattern. Connect the terms Find the hidden link between sports terms
