Robertson, 32, will depart the club upon the expiration of his contract, bringing an end to his nine years at Anfield. The full-back has made 373 appearances since joining Liverpool from Hull City in 2017, winning two Premier League titles and the Champions League. He has also lifted the FA Cup, two League Cups, the FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup and Community Shield. “A celebration of Robertson’s Liverpool legacy is firmly on hold until the conclusion of the campaign, with the No.26 fully focused on helping the Reds end 2025-26 as successfully as possible,” a Liverpool statement read. Robertson follows Mohamed Salah in announcing his Liverpool departure ahead of the summer. It was announced in March Salah would leave the club at the end of the season following nine years at Anfield. The Athletic reported in January that Spurs were working on a deal to sign Robertson. Liverpool, though, had been unwilling to sanction a departure for Robertson during the window. Tottenham had always been aware that a potential deal was contingent on Liverpool being able to replace Robertson in their squad. Left-back Kostas Tsimikas was allowed to join Roma on a season-long loan, and recalling him required the Serie A club’s agreement. Robertson has been Liverpool’s first-choice left-back for the majority his time at the club, but has fallen down the pecking order following the summer signing of Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth. He has made 31 appearances in all competitions this campaign but started only six matches in the Premier League. He had attracted interest from Atletico Madrid last summer and when asked about his future in January, said he wanted to stay but added that he is “a player who wants to play”. Robertson has scored 13 goals and provided 69 assists during his nine years at Anfield. This included 12 assists in 36 Premier League appearances as Liverpool won the top-flight title for the first time in 30 years in 2019-20. He also captained Scotland as they secured qualification for their first men’s World Cup since 1998 by topping Group C with a dramatic 4-2 victory against Denmark in November. Although this comes as no real surprise, it’s still a sad moment for supporters as they prepare to wave goodbye to a club legend. Robertson’s journey at Liverpool is the embodiment of grit, leadership, and star quality. He was signed with little fanfare but quickly silenced any doubters with his determination and consistency. His tireless running down the flank, pinpoint deliveries, and defensive tenacity made him indispensable during one of the most successful periods in Liverpool’s history, but beyond achievements and trophies, it’s his character that cements his legacy. Vocal, passionate, and fiercely committed, he has helped set the standards for years and even in more recent weeks, he’s continued to remain the ultimate professional with his attitude towards playing and the future. Robertson may no longer be the all-action, marauding left-back, who at one stage was viewed as among the best in his position across the world, but that’s not to say he’s finished yet. Plenty of top flight clubs will be interested in him and he’ll be in a good position to pick the next move as a free agent in the summer. This early announcement also gives the Scot enough time to receive a proper send-off, alongside his long-term team-mate Mohamed Salah. Ultimately he wanted to play more often which is why he’s leaving, but Liverpool already have their replacement in Milos Kerkez, so there’s no desperate need to recruit a ready-made star. What Liverpool will need to do is continue to plan for the future and hire another left-back to increase competition. Kostos Tsimikas returns from a loan spell at Roma this summer but is unlikely to be a part of plans next season. Spot the pattern. Connect the terms Find the hidden link between sports terms
